Thanks, I love it. The colour is the factory Diamond Silver Metallic. I'm going to get Olive's hood done as well in the same colour once I install the NACA duct. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

I hope to get on with the 5 lug conversion on the 924 this weekend.
I was just looking for an older picture of the intake of the red 924 and stumbled over these pictures....my god that car looked amazing. I fall in love with it every time i see it...as i did every day i looked at it.

I have quiet a to do list on the Turbo. In the coming weeks I am planning the following:
- Replace WUR with a rebuilt one
- Replace Center console with NOS unit (My radio keeps falling out due to some cracks in the current unit)
- Replace rear interior quarter panels with a stock set. The previous owner cut some big holes and placed horrible eighties speakers
- Mount a set a 968 Anti Roll bars
- Replace the spark plugs
- Get the rear wiper operational again
- Fix the rear demister
- Maybe rebuild the wastegate (I have a new diaprgham, sleeve and gastket)
- Remove the primary muffler
Then she should be ready for another fun filled driving season |

I've been going mad restoring my 931 to some semblance of driving glory. In the last month, I've removed the turbo while still in the car (I feel like I can do anything now) to replace the leaking o-ring that was causing my smoke issue. Also, cleaning up, and repainting the crossmember. I've still gotta replace the balljoints, clean and paint the control arms, weld on a new muffler, install new flooring and carpets, replace the rear shocks, fix the darned headlights, and a lot more. I really should post more often...

Today i prepared both front 5lug spindles and converted a set of struts to coilovers that i grafted from the GTS wannabe suspension.
The struts on that car were bent so not useable.
Inserts are red BOGEs, this car is going to be quite stiff.
Tomorrow i will attempt to dismantle the front 4 lug setup and replace it with the 5lug one, calipers, struts, spindles and wheels included.
End of the week i should have the rears done as well
Feels damn good to be moving with a 924 project again !

Any tips or watch outs greatly received ........ it was installed on the motor whilst it was all out of the car. Doing it in the car fills me with some trepidation _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Steve, thank you for the kind words.
Dont start with the pedal to the metal strategy, be very careful on the AFR values, i found that the gauge has a delay, i first heard detonation, power loss and then saw the AFR drop. I dont know if fueling caused detonation or detonation caused the AFR to drop...but up top there surely was not enough fuel at WOT, i could only run it at 3/4 throttle. Make sure you're always running minimum 100oct fuel. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Most certainly it was fueling that caused detonation, if you don't have any misfire or incomplete combustion the AFRs shouldnt be affected.
Remember steve has adjustable ignition timing aswell, so you can start out fairly conservative and work yourself up. Just don't go to late/safe or EGTs can skyrocket and ruin your new turbo.
I can get the feeling, similar to when i had to redo the clutch just after a year of engine work. Most engine jobs on this car is a complete nightmare, but in the end its doable. I took a day of from work to disassemble and another day for assembly when i redid the clutch, so worth it to be able to work efficiently for once.
Do it doit do it! _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Managed to complete the 5lug swap on the fronts today.
Realising now how much the 924 has become a part of my life, its like a drug, keeps me focused, busy and happy to know that i have one and i'm doing stuff to it to make it better, or just simply drive it around for fun. Does not work with other cars for some reason. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

No worries! I'm happy to share my experience! I'll list out the bits I'll be better prepared for next time I do this (if I have to....)
1. Whatever clothes you wear for this job will forever be "working on car clothes". There's a good chance you'll get oil and grime all over you and the clothes you wear then hopefully shouldn't hold sentimental value.
2. If you have the factory assembly and disassembly manual, DO NOT follow it exactly! At least in my case, it was better as a reference than strict instructions. The job is rather simple if broken into sections.
3. You're gonna want the front end at least 1-2ft off the ground to have breathing room. If I had a lift, I might be able to get it out within an hour next time.
4. I'd probably do an oil change at the same time, so drain the engine of its oil before starting (you will be removing a couple oil lines and fittings and this will be the messiest part.
5. Last thing, I had a clear shot at the turbo having removed the oil pan, crossmember, and suspension bits attached to it for cleaning and rebuilding. The former will probably be the largest obstruction when the turbo is free.
If you've more specific questions about the process, I'll answer them as best I can! _________________ '80 931 M471 - Dolomite Gray -> Monaco Blue |
