Its seems that the info is very limited out there. What makes a 931 a "S"? From the little info I can find, just about anything made it a S. I just bought a 1982 931, 118,000miles, orginal owner, light metallic blue, tan tweed interior, 5 lug lace wheels, cold A/C, disc all around. How do I figure out if it is a S? |

Chap, the S has a 2.5 litre Porsche engine the 931 has a 2.0 litre Turbo engine.
If it's a 931 it's a 924 Turbo, if it's an S it's a 924S

There were some 931S's made actually - and they had the 2L (1984cc) turbo engine. They would have been produced earlier, during the time that US 931's were still coming stock with 4-bolt wheels. They produced some with 5-bolt, and possibly some other upgrades, and slapped a large "S" decal on the hood.
Porsche has tended to do this - produce some cars with upgrades and call them S's, then the next year all cars are made with the upgrades, but they drop the "S" designation.
-So a US 931S would likely be a 1980 with 5-bolt wheels and the S decal on the hood. There's a picture of one somewhere on 924.org. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

I figured it was something like that. There seems to be such an inconsistancy with these early model 924's. I haven't seen two a like yet! Yellow, green, white gauges. "Porsche" or blank door handles. Which steering wheel? What seats? Spoiler no spoiler. Wheels? Tranny? Its amazing how many different combo's there can be. |

The 931S as far as I know was only a 1980 model. (???) It had 4 wheel discs (5 lug) 928 16: wheels (not the phone dials) leather interior, LSD, front and rear stabilizer bars, KONI sport struts/shocks. (yellow) This is for the US, I don't know about ROW.
I had one that was silver with black interior. |

Yes Virginia. There IS an 'S'
I don't know that the LSD was a standard part of the S package, though. Fifty50Plus recently acquired a 931S (parts donor) that did not have the LSD. According to the info at the above link, the S designation was essentially the M471 suspension option plus the S hood decal. The LSD was not part of the M471 package. It's also worth noting that the S package (M471 + decal) was available for both the 931 and the NA. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I should just get the decal anyway. Mine's no different than the S, if not better. not to mention the low numbers of 82's still out there |

Correction...I have a 1979 NA with the S decal. It came with the LSD and the M471 5 bolt brake package, no leather and standard steering wheel. It's the basis for my upcoming SCCA racer. Dan's thinking of the 1980 931 that he saw in my garage. It was four bolt and open Dif. Now gone to the melter. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car

Ahhhh! Hmm. So maybe the LSD was a standard feature of the "S" package. Very interesting! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I think it might be a Limited slip, based on my tire marks that I made in the rock driveway. Its funny, I start out rolling and midway through the driveway, full turbo, rocks get kicked up by both tires! |
