Just filled my car with valvoline VR1 20w50 racing oil.
Anybody ever tried this stuff? |

hmm...how is te viscosity? is it not too much of a marmelade for an everyday car ? _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

I use this oil in my car. What can I say, engine sounds very good. But because it is a mineral oil, I have to change it very often. But luckily it is not very expensive. _________________ Mikko

I use the straight 40W in my racecar, have done so now for a couple of years, been very happy with it. Sure, I change it after every race weekend, but it's cheap insurance, and an oil change isn't cheap for me - 8 quarts!!! 2 Gallons! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Not too happy so far. Was worried about the viscosity myself. The only way to get 10w30 was to order a whole case. I started the car last night and heard tappet clatter for the first revolution. If this keeps up I will be draining out 25.00 of new oil. Never have used 20w50 before, but it seemed popular in the porsche community. |

Joe, what is the temperature over there? 20W-50 oil is suitable for summer conditions only. _________________ Mikko

but dont you have an S ? for the S you should use 10W or 15W sintetic or semi-sintetic. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

| it is averaging between the high 30s at night to the high 60s during the day. It has been an abnormally warm winter. Will the oil be ok for 2000 miles or should I dump it? |

Did my first full oil change the other day since I bought me S, and used regular 10W30 Castrol and a K&W Gold filter.
The oil drain plug had a bunch of metal grit all over it - the magnetic thing picked up a few bigger flakes of metal that have me a little concerned.
How much metal grit and how big is normal for every 2,500 miles?

Depends on how hard you tach it on a regular basis. I seldom let the rpms get over 4000, and when I drain my oil at 3000 miles there is a tiny ridge of metal paste on the very end of the magnet. I have never seen flakes or filings of any kind stuck to the magnet. I am wanting to say that my SE never had anything on the magnet ever when I changed the oil.
I was told at rennlist that the 20w50 would be just fine, but for next time, I should not use it during cold weather. Considering how warm it is here I am not worried. The oil pressure seems to run high longer, but after the car gets to 70 or so and I come to a stop the guage is reading under 3. |

| BC do you know how to cut your oil filter open? If you did not throw your filter away, get it and cut it open around the gasket end and pull out the filter. Run your finger down between the ridges in the filter element and see if it comes away grey. Remember your magnet will not pick up aluminum. |

I wouldn't worry that much about using this oil when your temps are above freezing the whole time!!! Let's all try to remember how the oils are rated, after all... _________________ Vaughan Scott

So after a year Joe, can you give any update on this particular oil? Hope you`ve changed it by now.
Was it in a 2.0 or 2.5? Although both run similar flat followers, and solid or hydraulic is not of major relevance apparently.
In case you or others are not aware, this oil has a high ZDDP content and am seriously considering running it or one of the few other rarer oils that also do. The viscosity is not the issue here but what are the min and max temps in your location? For Australian use 20W50 is ideal though.

Found the oil worked VERY well. I used it in a 2.5. It is a little thick however, and not very suitable for cold start/winter use.(I dont like tappet noise on start up) I have since switched to Valvoline FULL SYNTHETIC in 10w30 for summer and 5w30 for daily temp below freezing. I have found that the synthetic oil stays clear for at least 2500 miles and never drops on the dipstick. (Using standard valvoline oil, I usually saw 1/8 to 3/8" drop on the dipstick in 3000 miles). After 4 oil changes with full synthetic Valvoline I will probably never use anything else. It is good shit.
That said, I think the VR1 20w50 would be fine for hot climates or race cars. |
