Rebuilding this mitsubishi 2.6 SOHC motor right
now in my new garage...putting in all new
bearings & rings... nice little engine 156 Cu
& has a chain timing belt with 2 balance shafts...
Have a neet edelbrock air cleaner and a set of
8mm prostock wires...have more pics in a day
or 2... This engine had 180,000 miles so I figured
it was time. Its carburated with a 2 barrel feed
back carb. Its out a mighty max king cab

Do yourself a favor and replace the timing set with a balance shaft eliminator kit. I have one of these sitting in my shop now with a skipped chain and a bunch of bent valves. Atleast replace the timing set even if you decide not to go with the eliminators.

Well im into this engine for 400 bucks already... endwrench and though im new to the timing set.. ive done my studying and have figured it out
the gear teeth are still sharp and the chain doesnt seem to have stretched
or at least show wear.. and the guides with the black teflon plastic material
(theres about 4 of them) they have very little wear from the chain..Im thinking maybe someone already replaced the gear set...its about 150 bucks for one and I cant go there for now.

I owned 2 of those motors, they used a quart about every 3,000 miles.

That's funny, I was just talking with one of the DSM guys who tells me that you can build a 2.8 liter stroker engine using one of these, a crank from another mitsubishi and the head from a 4G63 out of an Evo. Supposedly absurd power levels.

Do you beleive that this setup worked it did though instead of raising the jack alot i lowered the vehicle cause i have adjustable jack stands ...
reason I had to mess with tranny removal being after i attached the flywheel i went ahead and attached the torque converter ...lol big misstake
motor would align cause the converter hass a geroove it needed to be set in..I had returned the engine hoist the day before... so i pulled the tranny
it was a real nasty task though its in see the manual didnt say anything about setting the converter in the groove in the tranny first it was a little tricky getting the converter holes to meet up[ with the flywheel holes..

I've had two of those motors. One was an n/a in a 1979 "Plymouth Fire Arrow" (by Mitsubishi) and the other was a turbo in a 1983 Mitsi Starion. I found them reasonably reliable (over 150k mi on both without major service), but torquey. Both seemed like truck motors that didn't have much grunt over 5k rpm. Both produced nice power down low however.

Porsche used the same balance shaft technology on the 944's as Mitsi did on their 2.6's and the Mitsi version had a third "jet valve" which opened up to swirl the intake charge for better combustion and fuel economy.

I loved that arrow. Had the most obnoxious stripes you'd ever seen!!

Almost done just need to set the dizzy up n add plugs and make the new wire end. Man I hope its timed right Id hate toi take off the timing cover again... with the early 944 you had to use a special tool to get the timing chain and balance shafts set am i right.. with this motor you just had to use a feller guage. The carb set up is a night mare more hoses than id care to see lots like say maybe 13.
