New member and my first how-to, please be gentle .
The rear hatch weatherstripping had separated from the windlace trim and was letting exhaust fumes into the car. Trying to save money getting the 931 back on the road my brilliant husband suggested we use the door trim from a 1994 BMW 740 we had just parted out.
Supply list:
2 pieces door trim from early 90's BMW
1 tube 3M weatherstripping adhesive (black)
Masking tape
Denatured alcohol
Rags & Paper towels
Scraper
Wire cutters
Handy assistant (I used my teenage daughter who will be driving the Porsche)
Remove old weatherstripping and windlace trim.
Use scraper and Denatured Alcohol to remove old adhesive and clean the surface.
Find the seam in the BMW door trim and break apart by bending back and forth. It is heat sealed and comes apart easily. Test fit your pieces. I put my seams at the top of the hatch. Trim to fit with wire cutters.
Apply adhesive as directed on tube.
Tape corners or areas where trim may lift due to previous use.
Here's where I placed the seams.
After we let it set for a few minutes we removed the tape and closed the hatch. No more fumes! _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo |

I just bought some from a classic car show £11 for 5 meters. I didn't glue it on either, it just snapped into place.
I don't get gassed now but I get petrol vapours instead! (Tank top hoses I suspect) _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

Thanks guys, no offense taken - apology accepted.
I understand I am in a man's world on this forum and sorry but the Porsche is mine. My daughter is the proud owner of a 1991 Camaro Z28 which was recently in an accident. I made her a deal that if she helped get the 931 on the road she could drive it until she saved the money to repair her Camaro. She's been a champ and helped pull the head, clean and paint parts, install the weatherstripping and a new shift boot. She has even gone to the wrecking yard to get parts. _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo |
