The FTC has initiated rules that allow people to opt out of telemarketing calling lists. If you get your number on the list, telemarketers stop calling you. Cell phone numbers were released to telemarketers too (while you pay for the minutes), and the effective period for "DO NOT CALL" just expired.

Actually, this is a rare instance of the government getting in between citizens and obnoxious shitheels hassling them for money.

Does it really make any difference in the US?

We have a similar do not call register in Oz but it excludes charities, religious organizations, BS surveys, any one that has previously rang or done business with, phone companies, and worst of all - politicians and political parties. As well as other Aholes who dont comply or dont give a Fk.

Verbal abuse including lots of obscene language gives better results and more satisfaction.

BTW, If they call you they pay for the call here.

Here is a FAQ from the FTC

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/04/dnc.shtm

Nothing has changed, you have always been able to put your cell phone on the list. There is no master list being released.

I recall last winter they were trying to pass a bill that would keep you on the DNC list for longer than 5 years. Any know if it passed?

Shawn

Some say it's the government's way of getting an email address for every phone number in the US.
