On the 1978 Porsche 924, the console has, on the right, the seatbelt and park brake lights, the cigarette lighter in the middle, and to the right of that, what is it? My 924 came without that gauge or light in it. If someone could tell me what exactly goes in that spot, I would appreciate it.

This website shows a picture of what I'm talking about, and its number 19 in the picture. Thanks.

I believe that is the rear defroster switch.

My rear defroster switch is by my hazards switch, which are right below my windshield wiper lever, on the console.

You mean to the left of the cig lighter. That's for the fog lights. Some cars have only a blanking plug there.

...and if you're looking for a switch like that, you should be able to find one in an early 944. Works good if you've added fog lights to your 924, or added a euro bumper.

this is to turn on the extra brake lights. the fog lamps switch is the small switch in front of the ash tray. Thats on my 80 euro model anyway

Better get that looked at.

Do a search on "dash" and "light".

You'll need a bunch of 12v 1.2watt "miniature lamps" Sylvania/GTE #37.

To get back there, I always remove the steering wheel, the gauge cluster and disconnect the speedo cable. I think others pull out the cluster just far enough to reach around and push the gauge/s out from behind.

Actually, there's a higher-wattage bulb, like 1.3 or 1.5W, or maybe 2W, available, same base, just brighter... worth digging through the bulb selection to find. I will post the # if I find it...

Thanks for the quick responses. It so nice to know that this forum is active. I would like the part number for the brighter lights if you find it. It will be nice to be able to see the 'odmeter again. Is removing the instrument cluster difficult? Are there any gotchas I should be aware of before I break something behind the cluster?

The only PITA part is disconnecting (unscrewing) the speedo cable from the back of the speedo - not easy to get your hands in there. This must be done before the cluster can be completely removed.

Vaughan: Any chance this higher wattage will cause a higher temp to melt plastic pieces inside the gauges? I dunno. Just asking. I'm trying to recall what's inside those gauges. I'll have to check when I take them apart again. Seems the tach and speedo would be okay but the fuel/temp gauge might have plastic in closer proximity to the lamp.

I don't recall if I used higher wattage bulbs there... probably I did... I don't expect any issues.
