Well I had a hard time tracking down rear shocks for a reasonable (cheap) price. Nearest price for the rear was $185 each. (75 UK pounds)
In fact in Australia they are nigh on impossible to obtain.
I was told the 944 shocks are nearly identical except for the bottom bolt hole is larger.
Now these shocks I can get and cheap..
I bought a full set for all 4 corners as a package deal. Total = $350 AUD. Incl freight. (140 pounds)
Well the rear shocks were different. The bottom hole is larger and the spacer/crush tube is shorter. It looked like the originals were still on the car- 23 years from the factory.

Obvious fix, get a bigger bolt and washers. Drill out the bottom hole in the mounting. I use a step drill for this. The top bolt hole does not need to be altered.

Fit the new shock in the bottom first with the washers either side of the new shock.
Make sure you have a new split washer on the bolt. I also add a bit of anti-seize to each bolt. This makes it easier to get off in 10years.

Fit the top bolt and tighten.

Interestingly I got a pair of second hand OEM shocks off a 944 (£8!) and they bolted straight in with the same M12 bolts, so there might be different versions out there.

Ride is much improved regardless!!

the 944 had the same trailing arm setup as the 924 untill ´87. Should be almost indentical. After that they changed to aluminium. It would be logical that the alu arms have larger bolts, just look at the design.

We've discussed the use of VW Super Beatle shocks too.

I bought all 4 from the USA cheaper than I could buy a pair of rears here.

Actually 944 had the same rear shocks as 924 until 85 (same as 924 S), then they swapped to alloy arms and in 1987 the started to use wider offset (wider wheel hub and rotor).

True, 944 shocks are the same from 1981 to 08/1984. Take a look at the shocks finder on Koni.com, same references.

Still couldnt get them here for less than $370 a pair.
Makes sense that the early '44 fit but they were not available.

I put on a new pair of KYB rears yesterday. Got them as part of a set from US ebay same as Ozzie.

Interesting thing, one of the shocks had a 14mm ID lower crush tube same as the pair Ozzie got but the other had a 12mm ID lower crush tube. They both had the same KYB part number stamped on them (the later 944 part number). I couldn't find any tube with a 12mm ID and 14mm OD to bush the 14mm shock so I made one on a lathe at the metalwork class I'm taking.

Now I just need to replace the front shocks.
