911 & Porsche World
Issue 163

An interview with Walter Röhrl by Johnny Tipler (who owns a 964 C2, The Peppermint Pig)

Walter Röhrl "... I did the German Rally Championship in a Porsche 924 GTS and won six rounds..."

"Roland Kussmaul built the 924 GTS, and since then we've often worked together, and he knows exactly if I am satisfied with the car or not. All the competition cars like the GT3 RSR and GT2 are his work. He is not only an engineer, he is also a very good mechanic - and a very good driver, too. I have done two 24 hours of the Nürburgring with him. There was only one 924 GTS rally car. The traction was good because of the transaxle system, and it helped that the German rallies at that time were 90 per cent tarmac; gravel would have been a problem for this car. We only had power between 5- and 6000rpm, so it had to be kept in that narrow rev band. We had one special stage at Hockenheim and, with two people in the car, I did a lap time of 1m 40s. Even today a GT3 is only 10 seconds quicker. The car has been parked in the garage at Stuttgart since then. I told Klaus Bischoff at the museum we should restore it."

seems there has been quite a bit of talk lately about the cgt/s/r's , European car mag just had an article as well. more of a whimsical writing , about getting to take a gts on the track for historical racing and it breaking down (twice) , but still, any 924 press is good press!

i had a dream my car was actually worth something... if this stuff keeps coming up in print, it might come true... we should all buy more 924's immediately!
