I have an '82 931 I just picked up its a silverish blue color. Body is OK, paint is terrible, interior is decent, drivetrain and suspension excellent being that its a California car. Anyway black interior with early sport seats, heres the option codes-

C02 E31 409 431

I know that its a california car which is C02, and the early sport seats 409 and sport steering wheel 431, but does anyone know what the option group E31 is? I have seen a similar thing on a '86 944 turbo with an L21.

Transaxle code is- MB

Does anyone know the transaxle codes for the 924 931 program, I have printed out all of the 944 ones from '83 - '91 but I cant find any 924 stuff anywhere?

"MB" indicates it's the Audi 5-speed 016G USA '81'-82 gearbox, same as mine. The full designation is (016G MB).
"MX" would be the same, but for Japan (016G MX).
[edit- "6Q" indicates an Audi 5-speed 016G for USA/Canada/Japan with "Differential lock" (actually limited slip) (016G 6Q)]
"G31/01" is the snailshell (aka- Porsche-Getrag) 5-speed for Europe/RoW '79-'84.
"G31/02" would be the same, but for USA,Japan up to '80.

So I realize that the '81 and '82 931's have basically the same audi 5 speed as the early 944 without the speed sender! As I now have an '82 and a '80 with the snail, dog leg transaxle. However MB is the transaxle code in the '82 I have but what was the code for limited slip '81, '82 931's Because the '82 I just got has sport seats, sport steering wheel but I jacked up the rear and tried several different ways to get both tires to spin the same way but coudnt so it doesnt have limited slip! No 220 only option group E31 which is who knows what and 409 431.

A (12) tagged onto the end of the transmissions' serial number would indicate a locking (limited slip) differential [,but this applies to the G31/01 and G31/02 snailshells only].

There's a link to an option code decoder somewhere here - try a search. I think they're also listed somewhere in the FAQ or tech section.

Hey! Wo, Whoops.. looking at the little specs booklet again, that "(12)" at the end of the serial number only applies to the G31/01 and G31/02 boxes.
For the Audi 016G, a code "6Q" indicates (as the Porsche tech specs booklet states) - "6Q = 016G - 5-speed with differential lock"
(Don't be too confused by their overstating things there - what they're calling "differential lock" is actually a limited slip, not locking diff.)

6Q ok so I need to look for a '81 or '82 931 with 6Q for the transaxle code!
Im sure those are on every street corner! HA! HA!

Good luck! I've never heard of anyone find a factory LSD in a 924/944 trans other than the G31 from 1977 to 1985! Are you going to the track? Check into having a Quaife fitted.

A friend of mine has an early '83 944 with 220 and he has the same transaxle as the '81 and '82 931's right. I have seen one other early 944 with 220 option so there out there!

OK so I found a '84 944 at a local Northern California junk yard. And guess what it has option code 220. So I pulled the 8Q transaxle out and paid $like nothing dollars for it. So now I have my LSD transaxle for my 937 GT project, thanks for the help guys!
