jack the ass end of the car way up there so you can get to the front side of the transmission bellhousing. There is a ball and nylon socket that pops out out with age. There is also a ccoupling there that weras and induces slop.
You should also pull the carpet or plastic surround away from the shifter. Carefully as there are plastic clips you can break. When you get it up yu can pull the leather boot and then the rubber, you will see a metal spring clip. Slide/pop it off and the shifter head will come off. Then you can see down into the shifter shaft and a linkage to check for problems there.
If you find the rear socket arm has pop out you can get it back in there and loosely tie a metal wire around the entire drive tube and shifter rod to help hold the socket and ball together, this will buy you some time unitl you can replace the bad part. Test it with a friend to find the best tightness on the wire wrap. And take it easy on the shifts.

well, I cant see it or feel it from underneath the car so I'm going to make an access hole with a hole saw and see what I can find. I work at a metal stamping plant that makes parts for FORD so repairing the hole will be easy.
