What is life of 924 engine? What are the most miles you know of without rebuild? What is life with rebuilds like rod bearings and rings ? Thanks just wondering as I keep hearing about engines being taken down and what great shape they are in, , curious Jesse

I have read on these forums about 100k engines being disassembled and still showing cross-hatching marks in the bores, so it would seem the bottom end does very well. . .however I don't think you can get away with putting off headwork for much beyond that.

^ sounds about right. The bottom end is for diesel abuse after all.

Headgaskets and valve guides / stem seals seem to need replacing north of 100k miles. Although, a lot of these cars have been abused with oil changes / overheating / etc. Leaky gaskets aren't uncommon on the oil pan, which is somewhat of a pain.

Mine had done about 300,000km's before I finally seized it by over heating it in a rally. When it cooled down I topped up the oil and water and finished the rally (another 500km's) before I stripped it down and found the original honing marks in the block. I have most of the service records from new and it doesn't look like it had ever been rebuilt before!

These things are bullet proof!

My wifes '83 924 has 300 000+ kms on it and no rebuilds plus I turbocharged it few days ago.
Check Performance upgrades forum, there's topic about it.

Yeah, I've found the 2-liters to be pretty robust down low, hard to kill except through neglect... though I've seen my share of those!

Well, the odometer on my 1978 hasn't worked since the late 1990's, but looking through the history folder and service receipts I know the car cleared 200k miles by the time I bought her. I had a piston ring break a couple of years in so I'd say it was around the 250k mark that we changed the engine to a reconditioned one.

The crosshatching still shows on my sons '77, built Sep '76. The oil pressure is too high cold (7.5-8.5 bar) and too low hot (2.5) but replacing the filter with a short one and wrapping it in foil helped, (headers heating oil through filter via radiant heat?) an oil cooler is on the to do list.

I am running 5W-50 synthetic oil. I think the relief valve is stuck closed but haven't tried to remove it yet.
