Firstly, i am sorry for posting this silly question since it has probably been asked in one form or another about 406 million times before.

with that out of the way let me continue with the question.

I have recently bought a 1976 924 (the 904th 924 produced to be exact ). I think it is a REALLY fun car to drive, but it lacks just a little bit of power.

A few days ago i came across this wrecked `82 944, and i thought to my self "hmmm.... this car is basically the same chassis with a different engine..." i could get the engine really cheap, and the drivetrain aswell.
so i was wondering what parts need to be changed to get the 2.5 engine to fit..?

my primary concern is the motormounts of the 2.5 engine. it is mounted differently than the 2.0, right? well how is it mounted? would it be hard to fabricate a new mount/mounts?
how will the 2.5 engine mount up to the 2.0 clutch/transaxle?

remember, i get the parts cheap, so cost will not be the issue there...

i will surely make a DIY of this if it is not too hard.

Thank you VERY much for answers!

Welcome to the board, good to know that another 1976 is still on the road.

The issues of putting a 944 drivetrain in 2 liter 924 are numerous and while not impossible, not practical.

Probably the biggest issue is the motor mounts. The 924 motor hangs from body mounted mounts while the 944 mounts attach to the front cross member.

Your probably better off with a 931 engine. Or buy a 924S if you want the 2.5 porsche.

well, thing is that cars are pretty expensive over here. for an ok looking 944 i guess you`ll have to fork out about 13000 usd. the engine i will get for 320 usd (driveline, brakes + hub, and trans go for the same prices). i think it is safe to say that doing it my self is the cheapest option...

do anyone have pictures of the 944/924 engine bays with the engine pulled by any chance? it would help a bit to see just what is different... do the two different engines require a different crossmember or something..?

i have access to various machining tools, so i can make most things metal not too complex..

what about the engine-clutch-transaxle assembly? what do i need to change/modify?

thank you again guys, ant thanks for the welcome!

another little question....

what would be easier fabrication wise; swapping in a porsche 944 2.5 engine, or swapping in a audi 20V 5 cyl turbo engine?

i just found out i can get the complete 944 parts car for below 1900 usd. however, the car is taken in to this country as a parts car, so it would cost heaps to get it on the road. cheaper to beef up the 924 i think...

any comments?

Hi, Nice garage

I was actually thinking of buying that car myself, but luckily for you I got more cars than parking space at the moment, until the new workshop is finished

I have absolutely no experience in swapping 944 to 924, but I've read a bit about it on different forums.

Since the 944 basicly got the same parts as the 924S, I suppose it should be easy to get the car registered as rebuilt to a 924S, but it's probably a good idea to contact the authorities before you start swapping parts.

Since you got a "complete" donor car it should be possible to swap over everything in the suspension and driveline. But as mentioned you need to make new motor mounts and maybe use the crossmember from the 944 or buy a 924S crossmember.

Please keep us posted on the progress, and give me a call if you decide to give it up and sell the donor car

I live in Nannestad, just by the airport north of Oslo.

I got my 924 early this summer, and have been enjoing it since but now it is starting to scream for fresh rubber and bearings in the suspension.

Because of all the Snow soon to come in this country, I have to wait until the new workshop is ready (sometime before Christmas) before I can take on any bigger projects.

I bought it as a "hobby car" and I've been playing with some ideas:
- Buy a cheap 944 donor and upgrade to 924S
- Buy a cheap 924 Turbo donor car, and build a Carrera GT replica
- Sell the 924na and import an early stock 924 Turbo from Sweden
- Make my own Turbo kit and boost it to pices

But the car got full history and documentation and is in overall very good shape, so there is this little "voice in my head" that tells me to keep it stock and save a bit of car history for my kids I guess a mint 924 will be a rare sight on the roads in 2022

So I'm not quite sure wich route to follow at the moment. But if a cheap donor car is for sale when the new workshop is ready....

well, thing is, i haven`t started it up as the distributor is somewhat wasted. also, i think the air mass/pressure sensor is screwed... have to play around with it a bit before i get it going i guess. luckily i get another (in "not too good shape") 944 engine with the car, so when i get the time, ill see what i can do!
i live in kongsberg by the way..

edit

Oh! if you were talking about the 924, yes, it runs good, but i have had a few starting problems with it. i have hated that frickin k-jet stuff ever since my volvo 240..

Swapping 944 to 924 is easy if you have a donor car. Done over here several times. Basically just strip the entire 924 to bear body and throw everything from 944 in there: engine, tranny, transaxsle, breaks with assosiated plumbing and master cylinder, wire loom and instruments etc.
Only things you really need to modify a bit are front 924 crossmember to install custom engine mounts and firewall for to convert from cable-operated clutch to hydraulic one. I’ll try to take some photos of the crossmember modification if you are interested.
