Hi,

Anyone know how I can dispose of my very old fuel? Have a full tank of 98ron leaded fuel, but I'm told after a while it goes bad so need to get rid of it. The tip takes oil but not fuel. Also have 12 litres of fuel/ oil from the sump.

Thanks,

Jaf

You have bonfires?
Whoosh!!!

Seriously, I'd contact your local council about waste disposal.

Treat your friends who have newer economy cars to a gallon or two. Seriously, that's what knock sensors are for A gallon of old fuel in a full tank won't make a new car flinch.

I drained almost 6 gallons of 1.5 year old premium fuel out of mine last week. Thanks to some crazed woman who is blind to both stoplights and motorcycles, I've got a cheap rental for the week which I'll be "filling up"...

Over here, there are two "hazardous waste" garbage days where you can call the city and have them pickup old coolant/fuel/oil/etc. It's almost like they're telling you to poor it down the sink.

Thanks Nick. New fangled bits and bobs are good for something then! Problem is, I don't know many people who have new cars...how about sticking some in a 1973 VW transporter?!

Mmmmm, bonfires! Sounds like fun...probably get reported to the council by my nutty neighbour.

Local council tip doesn't take fuel, but I'll give the envirnoment agency a call tomorrow. What do you bet that they don't know?

you from Dagenham ? just throw it down the drain, the amount of crud that the Ford Motor Plant spewed into the enviroment, it might just clean things up a bit

Ask any local breakdown service where they dispose of contaminated fuel. When they get called out to drain a Diesel car thats been brimmed with unleaded and vice versa they charge to dispose of the fuel so must have somewhere for it to go.

Plan B is to contact any of these outdoor activity places that have old military vehicles. I was asking the chap that had an Abbot FV433 you could drive about what the fuel costs were.
He said the Rolls Royce multifuel engines were happy to run on just about anything you could pour in including mixed Diesel/unleaded.
If you donate 10 gallons of fuel you might be able to negotiate a free drive in one.

Just up the road from you

How old is the fuel, does it smell like varnish?

It also makes a good weed killer for driveway or sidewalk cracks.

Thanks! Good idea with the breakdown people. Will make some calls.

How cool are those tanks?? Not keen on the war aspect of them but the actual vehicles are amazing. Website says they're closed for the winter though. Er? Winter? It's bleeding hot here, though there's a lot of black clouds about.

Not sure that it smells like varnish but it does smell strange. It's 7 years old but it still stings like crazy. The car's not running right, very lumpy, so I figure fuel's the first thing to change. Shame cos it's 98ron leaded fuel which is really hard to get these days.

Jaf,

DON'T put it in a modern car. leaded will kill the catalyst. if you can, use it for an older motorbike, mower ect, but dilute it down with fresh fuel.
The tip will take the oil, or dilute the oil with the petrol, and take it all to the tip. They are the same thing really!!

Fedex it to George Bush I hear he's looking for new sources of fuel

Do Ford still make cars in Dagenham ? I once visited the plant 20 years back.

Used to call Fords in the UK, Dagenham Dustbins

Righto. Funny I had forgotten about the cat.

Problem with the tip is they say that they recycle the oil. Once it's got fuel in it I don't think it's usable. Certainly my oil went very watery with the fuel in it. Suppose they can seperate it somehow.
