yea well i finally went to the drag strip, LACR. it was a long drive.... but i think it was worth it, i had alot of fun and i ran the 924 my 1/4 mile was 21 sec!!!! then i let another person drive it and i guess he did a better take off then me he got low 19s. i didnt win anyone the whole time i was there tho, but i had a blast. so my question to you guyz is what is the best take off for the 924. i usually rev at 4000 rpm then i let the clutch go, my tires slip a little tho _________________ 80' Porsche 924 NA - Slower then a S L O W

you keep it at 3000 RPM then you let go of the clutch...but make sure you dont press the gas pedal to the bottom in that instant...weels will still spin...but a fraction of a second later STICK IT !
weels will spin less and car will shoot off !
Then change at 6000 RPM and you'll be fine
This is how i launch my car...and with 95oct messed up A/F and bad plugs i got @17.5s for 1/4 mile...i have to try it with the new 15" weels and 98 oct now that i have good plugs and good A/F setting. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Glad you had fun!
But WOW! 21 sec's is slow!
My mate's old '87 XF Falcon would run 18's all day. And that was a really slow car!
Even driven badly a 924 should be under 20 sec's, right? Makes me think there might be something wrong with you car, 924er. You've been complaining about that "ticking" noise and you reckon you can feel an exhaust gasket leaking? That's can't be helping any. Perhaps you should fix that and see if there's any other obvious sort of repairs that need to be done before you run it up the strip again..? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

yeah, its a broken exhaust manifold gasket and im missing a bolt too. and its leaking exhaust, im sure now thats where the sound is comming from. yesterday i ordered the manifold gasket from NAPA auto parts it was like 6 bux, but im sure the labor is gonna cost alot, because it looks like taking that thing off looks like a pain in the rear.
ill be sure to run it after then, i think ill do better. just need to work on my take off. there was a 914 over there that has a rebuilt 2.0 engine that ran 16s

Easy, now - while I'm not a big fan of drag racing at any speed - at least he's taking it to the track, right!?! _________________ Vaughan Scott

i dont feel like opening another thread so i thought i would just keep it on this one; but about the exhaust mainfold, i wanted to give it a shot instead of letting a mechanic do it by taking it off so i can change the gasket. it was almost impossible trying to take it off because its so close the the side of the car. has anyone ever taken it out before withought taking the whole engine off. is it nessesary? _________________ 80' Porsche 924 NA - Slower then a S L O W

You can just pull the remove the head from the engine to get the manifold off. Anything is possible, but the time and aggravation of trying to remove the manifold with the head installed would be crazy. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

I haven't. I'm sure someone has... try the search.
But I agree with Chrenan;

That's how we did mine. Time-consuming, no doubt. But surprisingly easy. And it gives you an excuse to do all the gaskets and get everything cleaned up! _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I've done it many times; at the same, time, I feel that there is a bit of wisdom in pulling the head to replace ALL the gaskets and clean up stuff... clean/re-grind valves, etc...
Anyway, I think even the first time I removed the head I unbolted the exhaust manifold in the car. It is indeed doable; helps to remove the head shield and the starter and alternator first, gives you more room to work/swing wrenches.
Your biggest issue is going to be rounded-off nuts, in my experience; plan to use new studs, lock washers, and nuts in reinstallation.
I actually found some missing studs on mine first time round.
If you can use a tap to clean out the threads in the head, that will help reassembly also. _________________ Vaughan Scott

yea ill be sure to clean it, the bolts look really rustly and im mising abolt on the side of the manifold which makes it leak more and makes it sound louder _________________ 80' Porsche 924 NA - Slower then a S L O W
