Welcome to the board!

Replace the whole unit since the labor is about the same either way (assuming your cable broke).

You may be able to stick your head under the dash and disconnect the cable from the speedo. If not stick your head under the dash and push out the combo gauge or tach so you can gain access from the front of the dash to unscrew the cable.

Once thats done, jack up the left front wheel and remove the tire. If you look closely at the wheel hub cover you will see the end of the speedo cable sticking out of the hub. It is held in place by a c clip. Undo the clip (DONT"T LOSE IT) and then pull the cable out of the hub from behind the spindle.

Tape a piece of wire to the wheel end of the cable so that you will have something to guide the new cable.

Then just pull it out from the dash side.

A 1 beer job...

Put a dab of silicone over the clip & speedo cable
sticking out of the hub cover
to keep moisture from getting inside the hub
assembly & rusting up.

After spending a while pulling out a rubber sleeve around cable end at hub...
I can now see into a hole about 3/4" deep and 1/2" wide. the cable goes in that hole. Am I supposed to find a c clip in there? I thought the clip would be on the outside of the hub. How does one retrieve a c clip from inside a hole like that? I would not be able to put a tool in there.

The clip was supposed to be on the hub- mine is missing also.
A good dollop of silicone will hold it.

Do you have the wheel off? If so, you need to knock the dust cover off the wheel spindle (covers the wheel bearings) with a mallet. Once that is off, you will be able to access the clip, or piece of wire wrap in my case, that secures the very end of the speedo cable to the wheel.
