I want to change the wheels on my 931 to 16" ones. The wheels that I really want are the Design 90 wheels as fitted to late 944S2. But after reading lots of differant posts on this board and some on other boards, I am a bit confused about the offsets.
To summarise
931 = 53mm Offset
early 944 = 23mm Offset
late 944 = 53mm Offset.
So depending on this information I should be able to fit any of the later 944 wheels to my 931, is this correct ?? , it seems a bit strange that Porsche change the offset to 23mm then a few years later change it back to 53mm, is there something i'm missing ? , has anyone fitted these wheels ?, do they fit ?

They fit...I've always wanted a set and have actually fitted a set on my car but couldn't afford them at the time.
As the rims get newer they start changing offset again and also front to back will be different.
I don't why there were two offsets. A buddy swears that 23mm offset offers a different handling on the early 944.

You've forgotten about ABS and rim sizes. The 931 rims are 6" wide, the 944 rims are 7". The change to the later 944 late-offset is to compensate for the addition of the wheel speed sensors for ABS inside the hubs - this made the hub faces further out, and offset needed to be increased to compensate.

Well, if you wanna be fast, consistently, you want ABS. Brake size would only be a consideration for rim diameter...

Thanks for the info guys, at least I know that they'll fit now before I spend all that hard earned cash. I plan to put 205 width tyres on all round, this should improve handling, as I have the 16mm rear and 27mm front sway bars from the 944 Turbo and they are too stiff for the standard 185 tyres. Brakes are the next project after the intercooler, but the standard ones seem OK for street use, they only fade if I brake from over 100 down to 10 or 20 repeatedly 3 or 4 times, but I guess thats what you do on a track.
Thanks again,

I do think the change in offset helped to tuck wider tires under the existing body shape.
Since ABS isn't available (at least affordable) for the 82 931 I guess I'll never know if it is more consistent.
Besides
I like each wheel locking up a little in series before coming to a full stop, more fun of trying to quess which way the nose is pointing when I'm done.:0 |
