I've got my gearbox into the mechanic for synchros etc.

I read a previous thread that pointed to the 944 gearbox as being a better gear setup for the turbo. What's involved in swapping in a 944 tranny to a 1980 924 turbo?

Any problems one can anticipate? Does it bolt in?

The 944 trans is essentially identical to the 81-82 931 trans. You'd need to change all between and including the torque tube and trans. You'd need the mounts for the Audi-style box, and the shift linkage, but it's standard 944 stuff. The clutch components and halfshafts would be fine as is.

Maybe the hardest part would be finding the bolt holes on the underside of the trunk deck for the trans mounts, but they're there.

Oh, yeah, there is one other thing.

Since you've got the snailshell type trans, you'd want to swap out your torsion bar carrier to a normal 924 or 944 torsion bar carrier. It's bolt-in, but fairly major surgery. OTOH, it does give you a good excuse to replace torsion bars, bushings, etc.

It's also kinda helpful, if not required, to drop the housing in order to R+R the torque tube...

Thanks Vaughan.

Yeah, the 944 transmission seems like such a win over the 931 transmission. I've dropped a lot on the new high compression pistons and intercooler, so now I just have to get a night job at McDonalds and save my pennies for 2 years for an appropriate 944 transmission!

Huh??? I seem to recall, they're plentiful enough you should be able to get one for a decent amount used, with torque tube... maybe $500 US or thereabouts?

Of course I forget, you've already cashed out...

Hmm, how much for a tranny out of a 944 with TT and shifter? 5 speed?
