ok i know this is probably covered in the faq sections but i want to put out my situation and get some feed back..My problem is this (on a 77)..When i wake up in the morning to go to school my car starts fine most of the time. Some times it takes a few cranks but not too bad.. But when i am leaving school (about 6 hours later) it takes a lot of cranks to get the car started. Even when giving the car gas. I notice that if i turn the car off and go in the store and come back out it starts fine then but if i leave it sitting for about an hour or so it dosent want to start easy.

I was told this was a fuel injection problem.. any clues as to how this can be fixed..?

any sugesstions would be greatly appreciated!

yeah its probably fuel related. Could be a lot of different things though and I have the same problem. if the starter works fine and the timing, distributer etc is working fine then its probably not getting enought fuel because of vapour lock . this is what I was told.

could be because the fuel is being drained back into the gas tank through the valve on the fuel pump which you can replace. but you probably need to get the fuel system tested first because it could be something else.

also fuel injectors leaking and flooding the engine can stop it from starting.

on my car I made a button that when you press while cranking (even when its is hot) it will make the 5th injector on the intake manifold spray as long as you hold the botton (if you hold it too long you will flood the engine) and alot of the times it helps me start the car without waiting

if you want to make that all you do is connect a wire to the negative terminal of the 5th injector electrical connection then you bring that inside the car and connect it to one connector of a push button switch then the other connector connects to a good ground. the injector always gets positve current when you crank and when you press the push switch you provide the ground and the injector spray.

what timstar is referring to as vapour lock is the notorius hot start problem. Go read the FAQ on how to fix the hot start problem.

i have an 83 924 NA and i kind of get this problem too...my fuel pump is almost dead....so it takes some time to pressurize the system...so what it do is: keep the fuel pump running for like 4-5 seconds before starting the car so the pump has time to pressurize the system. it starts every time.

You're loosing pressure in your fuel system over time, or due to under hood heat, you are vaporizing fuel in the fuel lines causing no fuel to get to the engine on startup (at least for a while). At the rear of the car check that your accumulator isn't leaking (there is a screw on the underside of the accumlator, if you take it out and fuel comes out, you need a new one). Make sure your check valve after your external fuel pump is working (some 924 pumps have integrated check valves apparently). Better yet, go to the dealership and get an inline check valve, they are about $30, and install it on the output side of your fuel pump. Also, pull your injectors and make sure they don't dribble or leak fuel when they should be closed, this can flood an engine. If you suspect under hood temperature is the problem, you can get a lower temperature thermostat and fan switch, and also install the dual fan setup from an air-conditioned 924 if you don't already have it.
