|
| Does anybody know if they make carbon fiber hoods for 924s'? I know that they make some of fiber glass, but I like the carbon fiber look and feel. Does anybody know. |

14lbs! That's less than 6.5kg's! Says the original one is 36kg's!
That's some serious weight reduction!
What do the fibreglass ones weigh? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

well you have two choices race or street
street has the under bracing x and soem addition dowel rod support
race doesn't
but the weight is roughly the same as carbon fiber, maybe a tad more.
The carbon fiber isn't autoclaved nor vacuumed, so not aerospace spec.
they just use the cloth for looks and grins, pretty thick stuff _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

Don't take the numbers at GT-Racing with anything but a grain of salt. I've weight stock components, and proven their claims to be a bit on the optimistic side! But of course you will save weight - just not as much as claimed.
For example, I think I weighed the rear hatch glass at around 60lbs, whereas they said that replacing it with lexan would save you 80#! That kind of math doesn't work for me...
That said, I AM a happy, satisfied customer of GT-Racing; I have a whole set of GTR bodywork from them which will one day become a complete car, and was very happy with Hank's service. He's a stand-up guy and supports PCA actively, and just generally a cool guy to talk to. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I met Hank at one of our clubraces a year or so ago. Nice guy. _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

14 pounds for a carbon hood? Who are they kidding? That is an outrageous weight. I'm anticipiating something more in the 8 pound range. Granted, I'm also thinking race use, but the areo forces would mean that a race hood would need to be stronger than a street one. And I'm thinking pins and no hinges or latches.
For comparison, the noses we make for the GT1 Corvettes ('97-style Trans-Am body) weigh 18 pounds, including the splitter. And, yes, they have been crash-tested... These are not autoclaved, but are vacuum-bagged. |
