| Could anyone share their experience with importing a complete Porsche into Canada. Anything over 15 years old should be duty free and I am aware there is a $180 administration fee of some sort. What else did you have to deal with and would you do it again? |

A vender from New Jersey brought an '80 924 Turbo into Ontario for me (nice fellow) and paid a little duty at the border. You can defer duty and pay it when you register the car. You can phone 'customs and revenue' to get it from the horses mouth.

I found quite a good article about it here:
http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/mj/import.htm
and also found the Registrar of Imported Vehicles site here:
http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html
Both documents explain the process and costs. What I would specifically like to know is what duty (if any) was charged on a Porsche because it's not made in North America. As I am planning to import something more than 15 years old, my understanding is that it does not need to be entered in the RIV, but excise tax will be charged on the A/C ($100) and then there will be ST and PST. |

WTF? IMHO RIV, A/C, ST & PST are a PITA!

Van Driver,
the only thing you need to do is to pay the duty and then get it to pass a vehicle inspection (this is easy provided the car doesnt have any MAJOR issues)
are looking 924 specific? _________________ 3 928s, |

They want the car to have all of it's updates. That means if someone sees somthing they don't like it doesn't get across.
Call customs and ask lots of questions. |

The Canadian side of the border has been covered, but your real problem will be the US side if you don't follow their rules. You must fax the title to the border crossing that you intend to use a full 3 business days ahead of your arrival, and verify that they have cleared it before coming.
Another thing: make sure you are using a commercial crossing if you put the car in a company name. Otherwise, if you use a non-commercial port, EVERYTHING you bring accross must be in your name.

Oh, one thing I forgot:
Made ABSOLUTELY SURE that you go through every nook and cranny in the car to remove anything unwanted or illegal. For instance, if you were carrying any extra parts, make sure there isn't a receipt tucked away somewhere unless you intend to declare same.
Now, there is the matter of drugs. A 20 year old Porsche of any kind has a pretty good chance of having been around some illicit substances some time in its life. All you need is to show up at a border crossing and have a waggy-tailed doggy pinpoint you as a drug smuggler. If you are really worried, I would call the local fuzz where you are buying and have them inspect the car with a sniffer hound to be absolutely sure you are not going to have any "surprises". _________________ All kinds of German cars (mostly VW-P-A)
