I have power and ground to the wiring harness for my headunit and it wont work. I thought maybe the headunit was dead, so i returned it and got a new one, and it still wont work. My power line is hot and my ground wire grounds....why wont it turn on?

How did yall wire the headunits in your car?

Do you have +12V when you try to power up the unit? If you have +12v off then it drops when you try to turn it on, you have a corroded fues connection or a bad wire to the radio. Do you have all power wires hooked up (Constant and Switched)? Don't forget brown in the car is ground!

Nooooooo don't have best buy or some associated chain shop do it. I think they would have killed themselves installing it in my car with the hack job wiring that was there from some PO. I'd rather have the satisfaction of knowing it's done right, and well and learn something in the process.

If you've got a multimeter mine helped me out quite a bit here. There's a constant 12v(?) source that's always on(for the clock and settings), and then there's the 12v that's on with the key in. You probably need both of those, though I'm not positive.

Whodak your spot on the money...you need two 12V sources for power, one constant 12V run through an inline fuse to the battery and one 12v routed through the ignition. These are normally coloured red and yellow. Black will be the ground wire and this goes to the chassis.
Make sure you haven't blown the fuse on the back of the head unit when installing it and check the fuse from the igniton line if you are using the origional radio line that the fuse in the fuse box isn't blown.
Refer to your installation manual that came with the head unit for the wiring colours.

meh, well actually who dak, there was some sony (i believe) headunit in there previously, and you could NOT believe all the wiring left behind, it was crazy, i had no idea where to begin, so i took it there, and it was done in 10 minutes... simple, easy and well worth the $20 knowing that it WAS done right! but to each their own. i was just tired of trying to do it myself. especially since the headunit just as alt_racer described would not turn on. although i didn't multimeter it, which now seems like an obvious place to begin...

If your car is a later car look and see if your wires are banded to the back of the headlight. If it is most likely the wires broke inside the harness. My sons 924S had one headlight that worked and one did not. We removed the tie wrap and the wires went limp. Cut and reconnected the one side and now all is well.

I didnt have the constant power hooked up, when i put both powerlines to the same 12v wire it turned on, then when i turned it off it lost all of its presets. then i realized the problem.

First off. i ran fresh power lines (tapped from behind fuses) both constant and switched and ran a new ground wire. Then everything worked just fine

Second. how would you install a headunit(in and old car) without a multi meter? mine is a godsend.

Third, i would not trust anything in the hands of Best Buy's car audio department. They do crappy installs with un-expierenced installers and cheap products.

And like Whodak said, i learned something in the process.

thanx for the help. And it all sounds great.
Right now i have 2 6x9's each running 130watts rms@4ohms
i have 5 1/4's on the way and i plan on installing my subwoofer this week.

Thanx for the help

Any electrical work would not be half as easy without a multimeter (especially one with a continuity tester)
Well done on the install....
