I think I've had enough of my car I'm going to drive it off a cliff soon.
Mechanically the car is ok with minor problems but I can drive it anywhere.
the problem for the past 6 months has been getting horrible headaches everytime I drive my car. I drove to the exhaust shop today and they checked for leaks and told me the exhaust has no leaks. I got my noisy muffler replaced with a quieter one and a tip put on to extend it out from the rear pumper, I thought maybe it would help get the tip further away from the rear window etc.
It did nothing I drove home from school and now I have such a bad headache thats going to linger on till tom and then I have to drive again....
I tried the method of putting a rag over the muffler and seeing if any smoke comes out anywhere and I dont' see anything (didn't get someone to look in the engine area. but nowhere else was there any smoke only smoke came out from the sides of the muffler which is normal I was told.
also my rear hatch is glued (new seal but stil gaps so I filled the gaps with rubber glue).
I can pay to get the hatch properly fixed but I really don't think that would solve it. the tip is far out and don't think it would get into the hatch even if it was leaking.
haven't had time to close the two small holes in the hatch under the spare tire.
there is a burning oil smell in the engine compartment and the mechanic said that may be getting into the car trough the vents. so I covered the heater blower in the engine compartment with a plastic bag with duct tape agaiin I still got really bad headaches.
Inside the car I really can't smell these mysterious fumes but it feels like bad carbon monoxide poisoning.
last thing I'm going to do is fill those small holes or tape them up. get my hatch properly fixed.
maybe also the rear lights also covered with plastic to see if that would stop the heaadaches.
and then I'm going to crush my car because then I've tried every thing thats possilbe to fix the mystery fumes and I don't think anyone can fix it. _________________ 78 924 sold.

when i first got my car with the original exhaust and cat convertor I don't remember getting headaches but then I only drove it twice for 15-20 mins each time and my memory could be bad.
the old exhaust just had a cat convertor and resonator. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Does your car still have the cat, Tim?
Extending the tail pipe past the bumper might not be the right thing to do. The bumper acts a bit like a flow diverter, keeping the fumes close to the ground. If you put the pipe past the bumper, some of the fumes could be sucked upwards towards the vunerable rear hatch area. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

no cat. could that be the problem?
well the tip is held on the muffler with one of those clamp things so i can loosen the clamp with a wrench and push the bent tip further in the muffler but I don't know how much further back it would go.
but like I said before my muffler was behind the bumper and I had this problem now the tip is coming out same problem.
I've got a pounding headache right now feels like I'm driving a gas chamber. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Not by itself, but it could make things worse.
If you can't smell fumes and you're still suffering, it's almost certainly carbon monoxide, which is VERY dangerous and can KILL. Don't treat this problem lightly. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

yeah I can't really smell it my just has the old car smell.
yeah I know its dangerous thats why I want to trash my car I'd rather take the bus until i can buy another car than get daily carbon monoxide poisoning. but taking the bus everyday is a real pain a 15 min drive become a 1 hour bus ride.
its really weird thought opening my windows won't help at all I still get pounding headaches. _________________ 78 924 sold.

haha no I actually rarely drink. but this is way worse than any hangover.
theres pressure on the sides and back of my head and usually when I get out of my car my head feels like its floating like a helium baloon or something.
feels more like I'm extremely stoned which I'm not.
sorry I know this isn't the doctor's office. _________________ 78 924 sold.

When you use the towel method, you arent looking for smoke (exhaust gas can be completely clear). You are listening to hear if the engine revs are reducing to stall. If the engine stays running then exhaust is creeping out somewhere and giving you a headache. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

I couldn't hold it on for more than a few seconds there is too much pressure but when I held it on really tight for a few seconds I just saw smoke coming out the sides of the muffler thats normal.
how long would I have to hold it? its kinof hard to do.
the muffler guy checked my exhaust on the lift and felt around the gaskets with his hand and then said there is not leak anywhere.
my old mechanic also welded a hole in the exhaust and then said there were no more leaks _________________ 78 924 sold.

The only place it should come out is the hole in the end! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

when you hold the end of the muffler shut it is normal for it to creep out he edges of the muffler maybe just with the cheaper mufflers. the muffler guy told me this. _________________ 78 924 sold.

#1 fix the holes in the spare tire area! It will take all of 2 mins.
Stop driving with your windows down. When I drive my VW Jetta diesel I always get the smell from it in the car if I drive with the windows down or sunroof open. It has to do with the way the air flows around the car when you drive. Your car might be running too rich and giving off extra fumes?? Hard to say.....if you have oil burning off in the engine compartment....fix the leaks and steam clean the engine compartment. It can't be that complicated. _________________ 1976 924

I won't give up just yet but this is a health problem so I don't really feel like dying while driving my 924.
the exhaust guy also said my ehxuast "smells" and said it could be its running too rich ,that is a possibility even though my fuel mixture and ignition timing was set a few months ago but that mechanic was kinof shaddy.
I guess I'll drive the car one day when my headaches go away with the windows fully up and hopefully I won't die haha.
and then I'll see if that improves it.
I'll try and get the rubber "grommets" or whatever to seal those holes in teh hatch one quarter size under the spare tire, and two penny size on either side, next to the sunroof drain hole.
there is an oil leak on my engine not a big leak or anything but its behind the distributer where the oil pressure sensor is.
not sure how much it would cost to get the engine steam cleaned.
and my hatch does not fully seal with the new seal next to the pins there is a gap between the hatch and the seal which I sealed up with rubber glue (sounds bad but it should be pretty air tight). not sure if its worth a try to get the hatch properly fixed it might cost alot to do that and not fix the problem _________________ 78 924 sold.

No need to go to the dealer and pay 5 bucks each for those, I just used some gum rubber stuff that the PO had sealed the center light panel on the rear. Just Mash it together through the hole, you could even tape over them just to see, it would save some money.
Also, when you plug that one next to where the sunroof hole is, remember that your hatch locking area also drains into that rear quarter compartment, my hose stops and drips about 1 foot into that compartment, then drains out the hole. I couldn't figure out why I could hear SLOSH SLOSH SLOSH jacking up my car one day after it was parked in the rain all night .
The air dynamics of the rear of these cars is sort of strange I think, without the spoiler any dust seems to just cling to the rear of the car, hatch, light panels, bumper top and sides. It's really kind of annoying, byt the physics of the cars rear end might still be drawing fumes up to the top of the hatch by the pins. Try taping over the edges of the entire hatch from the outside and going for a 20 minute drive this weekend. Goodluck. _________________ Mike
