If I drive anywhere and the car heats to temp the starter will not turnover for quite some time.
I just fixed an exhaust manifold leak that I thought was over heating my starter plus I think it fouled a wire before I put it in the shop because it seemed like I was running on only three all of a sudden last week.. $500.00 bills later same problem.(broken studs galore and a new muffler as well.) I put in a new solenoid with the same problem. The starter was rebuilt last year. Is it new starter time or what? Ouch-I want my car back and running well.

I think that you may want to take the starter apart and clean the internals of the motor as it is possible that there is too much oil buildup inside (doubtful but possible)

also when you drive you car then stop and get out, is your exhaust cherry red?

It used to be until I set the mix with a air/fuel gauge.
The starter was soaked a couple of times before I fixed the pan leak and oil pressure sender.

I've had trouble with no-starts on both the coldest and hottest days of the year - both due to the solenoid being gunked-up. -So I'm in the habit of cleaning it twice a year (in the spring and fall) to keep it from happening. Since your current solenoid's been drenched in oil a couple of times, it's possible that a cleaning will get it back to working right.

someone here said that the online companies (paragon) tend to send you the wrong starter is this true for this site also?

my starter does the same when especially when the engine is hot but my old mechanic which i didn't really trust said the starter was bad .

ah crap that parts america site only ships to the states.

Anyone know a site to get the starter for the best price and also the correct starter for the car.

my starter used to get alot of oil onto it, my oil filter has the right angle adapter and I didn't know it had a seal against the block that had started to deteriate....
Otherwise I would suggest new starter cableing cause if your manifold had been getting that hot you may have cooked the wires nearby, my wires had oxidised and started to corrode due to the heat shield being missing from the starter.
After two starter rebuilds and and two alternator rebuilds I got that problem nailed to the wall.

What exactly does it do? Does it make any noise at all, a clicking, or just a very very slow turning then speed up after a few cranks?

augidog- I battled with this problem too. I replaced the solenoid with no effect. It turned out that the ground strap that bolts to the solenoid and is soldered inside the starter was the problem. It was very weak and if it got hot at all the resistance would build up and be too great to push the big current needed needed to spin the starter.

You could either replace the starter (easy). Or open your starter up and replace the ground strap if you're handy with a soldering iron. If you do the latter, make sure you use a very heavy gauge for the ground.

<edit> My symptoms were turn the key and get nothing. No click, not even a dimming of the headlights.

Yea that’s what it does on a daily basis. It starts fine in the morning.(sometimes.)
I'm going to pull the starter for a possible core charge anyway so I'll take a look. The starter is probably as old as the car.I'll check the strap first before I buy.
I remember twisting the ground strap so it would not look as frayed about a year ago before I finally got it rebuilt.
I’m not sure what the guy actually rebuilt, but he threw a nice coat of paint on it.
Paul, Thanks for the heads up on AutoZone. Great price and not far away.
Ouch -$70.00 more into the Dolomite gray metallic pit.

But it’s all worth it.
