I think Kahl and a few others were having the same problem with their fuel gauges as I was. The needle would never settle down to a constant reading for any length of time. Sometimes reading too low other times reading too high.

Low readings are easy to explain, but how can it read too high?

I found out when I removed mine and had a play. If you remove the earth connection to the gauge the needle pegs all the way to the right, no matter what the sender's doing!

Solution: clean up the ring of 12 pins at the back of the meter unit, clean the round plastic connector sockets (not easy, but I poked a needle file around in them one at a time) and for good measure, clean the earth 'crown' connector next to the fuse/relay panel.

Result: steady reading, gradually moving down as the fuel gets used up!

A good indication its the sender wires is having a problem with just the one gauge. If you fix it and the problem mysteriously crops up on another as it did with my gauges, look at fixing the earth connections.
