Just got back from travelling, and saw the thread. I can definitely help with the graphics, design, organization, web slinging, etc. I've done a buttload of it. Used to work as a webslinger for UPS and Hayes Lemmerz, and have done a bunch of moonlighting work too. In order to help, though, I'll need to have access to upload and change stuff. Vaughan, we should discuss next weekend.
I have all the tools, both for graphics, for web design, publishing, etc. I also have a bunch of contacts in the hosting biz, so we should be able to get plenty of space for extra media, like photos, audio files of how different cars sound, and other cool stuff. Depending on the capabilities of the current host, there are tons of open-source packages available in addition to the bulletin board package we are using here that could be added to the site. A great addition would be an on-site photo album. We would have to put some rules around it, and maybe restrict who could post based on some parameters, but Smoothie's photo album is awesome. It would be nice to have something like that local to this site.
The real trick to all of this is not so much time...that can be handled easily with proper delegation. The trick is to be organized and have a plan. I would suggest that we designate a small committee, maybe 3-5 regular members, that can help determine the priorities for various projects. Rather than go willy nilly at the list of nice-to-haves, we should handle it like any real project: determine requirements, assign priorities to them, assign stakeholders to collect and/or create content, and schedule the projects for completion. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Ideola, sounds like a good foundation to a working plan. But to get this project up and running, its going to take initiative. So many times I have seen ideas here on the board or group buys, that have never taken off.
A certain somebody has to "head up" this venture, and then delegate duties to the chosen few, based on specific qualifications. Times are busy at this time of year, so maybe a plan should be drawn up at some time early in the new year.
Peter, I appreciate you supportive comment and in fact I can add some documentation to the board (I take pictures of everything) , but the fact remains I am not the most proficient when it comes down to the programming aspect of things. Mind you, I can hold my own just from playing around the last few years. But somone with the skills like Ideola, can add quite a bit to this forum....
I don`t know. Maybe I sound stupid, but these are some of my thoughts...

I want to know at this current time what is the best web site developing tool.
I'm on a mac and a pc so I'm not limited. I have the full suite of adobe stuff on MAC.
I would love to see us goto streaming media.
I've got a lot of video footage.
I've got a 944turbo on a dirt oval spinning out during the one lap of america.
And even better is the Countach doing hot laps. _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

I use a product on the PC called NetObjects Fusion. I'm currently using version 4, which I found a while back for $49 online, but I don't think they make older versions available any more. I am also a Mac + PC user.
It used to be available for both platforms, but now is only a PC tool. The current version is v8 and retails for about $200. FrontPage is a typical Micro$oft cheap rip-off of the real thing. NetObjects blows everything else away as far as it's ability to manage an entire site, quickly prototype different "skins", version control, auto-generate graphically styled labels, and importantly, integrate with external tools for developing client-side javascript, external CGIs, ASPs or PHP scripts.
As for graphics, Photoshop is a must have.
For *streaming* media, we would need a host that supports it. I don't think we would actually need real streaming. Streaming is typically best for live events. What we want is enough space to host large static files, and then support a variety of methods of delivering it. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

http://www.bernarddesign.com/
guys check out this site, Gary Bernard is our PCA region webmaster.
He was telling me we could have him develop the site so that anyone with a PC and internet explorer (and a password) can edit content on 924.org.
He said the site will track who makes changes by the log, you can restrict users to areas, etc.
There would be a cost....might be nice to pony up some dough and get the site changed and then we keep it clean and updated with a group of contributors and committees setup to moderate certain areas so they can make changes as needed.
The forum is great but at some point the info needs to be cleaned and turned into "white paper" articles preferebly PDFs that can downloaded and printed.
Imagine each new tech "bulletin" available to print and put into a binder that you can stick in the garage.
Creating these bulletins will be the greatest challenge. And will take a wide effort with the members to do it in a timely and accurate manner.
We may need to pair writers and proof editors to do these projects.
But I'm only one voice of over 1500 so chime in.
Vaughn and Peter are the guys who keep the site open by thier generosity. _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

Zuffen, you dont have to pay for a site like that. All you need is a CMS or content management system. There are heaps of free ones that are easy to install such as moveableType and tikiWiki.
I am happy to help out with the site redesign and will post a picture of my proposed design shortly. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

I will gladly submit pictures of all parts you wish as I probally have most of the parts on file anyways. And can provide pictures of many items not often found or seen very often. I don't have much time to invest in the task, but since I have the parts on file anyways, it would be easy for me to transfer them to a disck and send them to someone that has more time.
Anywyas, I guess you know how I voted. _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |

I'd be willing to put in come coding time to help out.
I'll put some time into a mockup for a new design unless someone else has something in the works. I'd be willling to overhaul everything is need be - e-mail me a copy of the site and I'll go to town. _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)

Here is one of the phpbb themes/designs I was working on. Im not super happy with it, dont think its entirely suitable for the site but if it gets people talking then im happy. What do you reckon?
