Ok, I've got an '80 931...does this mean mine has LSD?

you need to check the code on your transaxle to tell if it was originally supplied with a LSD.

According to the itty bitty spec book all 931s with LSD had a transmission code of 31-01-nnnnn-12. It's the "12" after the 5 digit serial (nnnnn) which denotes a "differential lock".

Ok. On my parts car, two numbers, neither of which look like 31-01:

477 301 102
931 301 301

It was in storage for some time, dismantled and stored, never driven...could the tranny have been swapped with a 924 NA?

Rick

those are part numbers, possibly for the transmission casing. The "477" is the usual designation for a non-Porsche part so that is an Audi box, the "931" part is a Porsche-specific part.

According to the spec book, the 924 transmission codes look like "XX dd mm y" where XX is 2 letters identifying the transmission type and market and "dd mm y" is the production day, month and year. The US manual transmissions had identifying letters of XT, VB, VR or MF depending on the production year.

I don't know where to look for the transmission codes

Rick, if you have an '80, with the snailshell, the number you are looking for is on the bottom of the transmission right under the centerline of the differential. You will see a small flat area (looks like it was ground flat rather than cast that way), this area is invariably covered with grease and dirt, and that may totally hide the flat area, wipe it off. The number is in much smaller font than the casting numbers you have been looking at, and it is stamped in, so there are no raised areas to find it easily. But look, it is there.
