Starting to think about the sound system for this car...looking at the Blaupunkt stuff...
1. I've read some of the posts, but haven't found anything definitive on whether or not 5.25" speakers will fit in the doors. My car has no speaker holes in the door panel (yet), and I have power windows (if it matters). The 4" Blaupunkt speakers are 1.64" deep from flush, and the 5.25" are 2.04" deep from flush. Would be nice to get more low mids in the front that come with the larger speaker.
2. Would really like to go with component approach, but can't find 3.5", 4", or 4"x6" component speakers. They're all round and 5.25" up. So, question is, if I go with a coax's for the doors and 4x6s in the back, and then add two sets of 2" flush mount tweeters to the front and the rear, will I still get the advantage of a component system? (Obviously, I'll need a separate 4-ch amp to drive those pairs at 2 ohms).
Incidentally, CarDomain.com has some good bundles right now on the Blaupunkt woofers and amps (which I'll be adding to the above setup).
Thoughts, comments, opinions, please! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

If you like bass its great to go with woofers or subs and a amp
watch out what you buy I bought a bunch of stuff and the amps
and subs werent that great I just got a rockford fosgate amp
though its called the punch 45 now I need subs that can handle
its out put. I have dual coned 4X6s in custom shop built boxes
I had them mounted on the side in the rear under the window
over the rear speaker holes though Ive since set them where
the rear seat used to be. Though so Im sub and ampless ...
for the time being. Basically you get what you spend. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

I went with Clarion speakers they had a 4x6 that had a 4 mid and a seperate tweeter as I really dont like the sound of the 2 or 3 ways. _________________ 3 928s, |

Let me clarify my question about the tweeters...
The theory is, more speakers, more efficient and better sound. So my thought is to go with 4" coax speakers in the door with 1" tweeters, and 4x6" coax speakers in the rear with 1" tweeters. Theoretically, this setup should provide better "imaging", clearer sound, and make more efficient use of the power.
The tweeters come with their own inline crossover, so presumably, I'd filter out the high end so that the coax's would only be reproducting low-mids to mid-highs (something like 100 Hz to 3.5 kHz), effectively operating as a component speaker (since I can't find suitable component speakers in the sizes I want).
However, by combining the tweeters with the front and rear coax speakers respectively, I will need something that can handle a 2 ohm load, which the head will not be able to drive. Consequently, I'll need a discreet 4-channel amp to drive the whole setup. Then I will have an add'l 2-channel amp in bridged mono to drive a Bazooka sub.
Or will there not be enough of a difference by adding the tweeters to justify the additional ~$200 (for amp + two pairs of tweeters)? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
