I did mine recently. I went to a VW specialty shop. They sold me a device that has the 36mm socket cut into an 8 inch by 3/8 in chunnk of metal. Cost 20 dollars. American made. It takes a 1/2 inch drive. You beat on the metal with a sledge hammer. It worked well for me, it made the job easy.

You should of just taken the car to a tire shop thats what I did they undid it and retightend it light so i could get them off at home.
pick a store thats close though cause you shouldnt drive under speed like that and dont forget the cotter pins they need it 2 .

I did this only to find out my master cylinder was shot and the rear brake cylinders also soo back i went thats where I got my TA radials also.
