So like everything else, the special tool to seat the rear main seal on our cars is unobtainable. As a matter of fact, when you visit the dealer and ask to borrow 'tool 10-9, seal installer' they WILL look at you like you have tracked dog poop on the carpet. As far as they are concerned, our cars are obsolete. So go to Home Depot and get a 4"-3" PVC pipe adapter. This sucker fits the rear main seal like a dream. PLUS, if you feel like driving the seal in when you are drunk, PVC will not scar the crank if your aim is off!

Hey, you should have posted this before I did mine. I just used a block of plywood that I had cut a hole out of with a 3.5 inch hole saw. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

Thank you very much! Now if I could only figure out how to post thumbnails intead of big pictures I'd be all set. I had a few more pics but for the folks with dial-up I held it to one. _________________ Dan Flanagan--2002 VW Jetta TDI, 83 Mercedes 300D,83 Mercedes Euro-240D |

You first have to have the actual thumbnail image posted "out there" somewhere to reference just like the full sized one.
When I post my photos, the code I type in here on the Board looks something like this (linebreaks may make this example awkward to read, and I'm using curly brackets in this example instead of the proper square ones. The square ones would cause the little 'X' in a box to show instead of the code, or an actual photo if it was a real address):
{url=http://ipaddress/photodirectory/photo_fullsize.jpg}{img}http://ipaddress/photodirectory/photo_thumbnail.jpg{/img}{/url}
When posted to the Board, the thumbnail displays but when you click it, a new window opens up displaying the full size image.
Here's an example, using a photo I'm annotating with various engine components. Use your browser's 'View-Source' menu selections to see how it's actually formed and posted.
BTW, that PVC pipe mandrel is good. I used a piece of hardwood as a "drift" and gently tapped the seal into place. Couple taps on this side, couple taps on that side, and worked my way around the whole thing until it was seated. Just have to be careful to keep the contact on the outside circumference so the seal itself isn't damaged. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931

Bringing this thread back. I installed my main seal just like this, and somehow it failed, spilling 2 quarts of oil on my brand new clutch. Anybody have problems with this? _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

Sorry to hear that. Are you sure its the rear main? I had a similar problem with a na engine a year back or so. It ended up being a small plug in the back of the block was left out by the po when he had the engine out. The plug was for the main oil galley iirc. When I approached him about this, we came to the conclusion that-that particular galley was obscured by his engine stand and he inadvertantly missed it.
Either way, you are going to have to either pull the engine out or slide the tt and trans back and see what happened. |

Wow, that could be it. I got the block hot tanked, and they removed all the plugs in the block to get them rinsed. I was sure I put in all the plugs. I'll check on saturday when I take it apart. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"
