It appears that the starter is out on my 931. When I turn the key, the lights dim but the engine does not turn. No click. The problem was sudden in that it started fine one time and 30 minutes later wouldn't turn over.

I have checked the battery and the car starts fine with a push. Is there anything I can check under the dash? Will the starter from my '81 924NA swap in?

thanks!

Huh? They put a letter of mine in Pano?

I haven't gotten mine... will have to check it out! heh heh...

As for the starter - I fully expect it's a wiring problem, not the starter. I had this problem this past weekend at Gingerman, finally dealt with it.

#1 check the contacts in the 3-contact white nylon plug at the back of the cam cover. It holds, among others, the wires to control the starter. Make sure the contact is good.

#2 make sure the wires themselves are not fried on the exhaust. Mine had eventually fried on the exhaust. We removed the offending section of wire, spliced in fresh wire, and slid some high-temp Earl's hose around the outside to try to protect them better against the heat. It was very obvious where they'd fried. I would've used fiberglass insulatoin sleeve, but we were at the track, and it was all we had... we'll see how it holds up... it is rated for pretty high temps...

Good luck...

Vaughan

Thanks for the advice... worked like a charm! The problem was the small wire on the starter was in contact with the larger cable. I moved them apart and it started right up! Much easier than pulling the thing out.

Also, here is the article for you from Panorama. Enjoy!
