About 924 being more likely a guy car.. it would appear that it is indeed the assumption. When I was in Chicago, in trafffic near downtown, I wanted to get to a street turn first and pass a bunch of cars,...and may be I cut someone's way a little swiftly. That did no really pay off cuz traffic lights as usual (..why bother..but it can be fun!). Arrive at traffic light, the guy I "cut" parks at my level and I can see his hand..and middle finger rinsing..until he sees me (female...yes) and the hand freezes. he had still Texas plates, presumably new in town, with anyone from Chcago that finger would have stayed up, female target or not.
But that was a good day, when in Chicago, I used to be given the finger at least a couple of times per 25 miles commute, I guess it does not say much for my driving. Driving in Chicago was fun, Chicagoans are aggressive but playfull too.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it.

I'm not so concerned with straight line acceleration, I've got motor swap plans (5 cyl turbo). Just curious about the handling compared to an early miata with similar suspension mods.

I like the 924 because its different, cheap, and well laid out. I'm not comparing it to a new turbo miata, just wondering if I'd be smarter to spend two or three grand more from the get go and get an older miata. Thanks again.

Well, I'm back from my trip down the Great Ocean Road! Absolutely stunning

You can see by the photos that it was overcast. But luckily I never saw a drop of rain.
I travelled about 1100km (~680 miles) during the weekend. I made it out to the Twelve Apostles on Saturday and then down to Wilsons Promontory -the southernmost point on the Australian mainland -on Sunday.

The car was brilliant; An 18 month old MX-5 with about 68,000km (~42,000 miles) on the clock. It had a six-speed gearbox... very cool
The acceleration wasn't a patch on the turbo toofah. And she struggled to top ~110mph. But she's a whip around the corners! At one stage there was a sign saying "caution, S-bends next 37km's"! (~23 miles!) And that's up and down a cliff face!

Anyways, here's a few pic's:

At Lorne, just after Torquay (the start of the Great Ocean Road)

A nice little valley

Above Apollo Bay

The MX-5

The Twelve Apostles

Another shot at the Twelve Apostles (tourist chopper landing in the background)

Sooo much fun

Hey Khal, what a great road eh! I often get work down in Warrnambool, Portland, etc. and of course why take the shorter inland route when I can drive the Great Ocean Road.

I just love that smell of hot rubber and the heart thumping when you pull over to take in a view.

Oh yeah! It's spectacular

I originally planned to get out to Warnambool but I didn't have time.

By the way, I saw your work on St. Paul's Cathedral on George Negus' show on the ABC. Very impressive He was interviewing the stonemasons, doing a "dying trade" special. But you weren't on there...

I used to go to wilsons prom all the time before I moved over here..
dad has a beach house in inverloch, a small (but growing, unfortunately) town about two hours drive from melbourne. another hour and you can go to the prom, which has some wonderful beaches and good hill climbing walks... (and amazing views from the tops!)

good to hear you had a good time khal, and they're nice pics too..

I saw a Lot of mitas at the 2007 Grand Prix Festival driven by older men with thier wivers. Also had a realy tall math teacher in high school that had one. Good thing it was a convertable. He barly fit into it.
My firts exposer to them was when my churches youth group lead's wife got one. I got to go for a ride and I remeber thinking it was so cool that the head rests had built in speeks!

I would think a modified or stock eropean 1988 924S would hold up with a 160 HP Mita. My friend had my 87 Keep up with an RX-7 right to 120 in a strait before he got scared and let off. It doesn't seam right that these cars only blue book for $5,000-$6,000 tops in the US. But it does make them very afforadable.
