What's the best oil for my 92k 931? The PO used 15/40 part synthetic. Should I be spending the extra on fully synthetic? _________________ 1980 924 Turbo RHD. 3" > 2.5" Stainless straight-through exhaust. |

Some of us use Mobil 1 15w-50 available in the States in a 5 quart jug for under $20. |

I've had only Mobil 1 full synthetic in it since I got the car over 10 years ago (sometimes 10W-30, the rest 15W-50). It seems to have been good for the turbo (KKK factory rebuilt) which has over 50,000 miles and is still running strong - and never had a problem with oil leaks from anywhere on the turbo or engine. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. So I should be okay running 15w/50 in British summertime, then 10w/30 in the cold winter?
I presume the 15w/40 that's in it will be okay for 1000 miles or so? _________________ 1980 924 Turbo RHD. 3" > 2.5" Stainless straight-through exhaust. |

15-50 Mobil-1 in the summer, 5-30 Mobil-1 in the winter. Your turbo will thank you. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

Thanks numbbers. I'm no mechanic, so thought I best ask! Just bought a tub 21.99GBP - about 40 USD i believe. Will be draining it very soon. Will I be okay just draining it without removing the filter? _________________ 1980 924 Turbo RHD. 3" > 2.5" Stainless straight-through exhaust. |

Always change the filter. Period.
If you don't, you'll leave about a liter/quart of old dirty oil in the system, in addition to having a dirty filter to start with. It's cheap insurance and good maintenance practice. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

I would want to replace it when doing the oil normally, but it's only 2 days old. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo RHD. 3" > 2.5" Stainless straight-through exhaust. |

OK, I'm confused.
If I understand the thread, you want to change from dino oil to synthetic, and the engine has been run with the current dino oil and filter. What is 2 days old? The oil or the filter or both?
-IMO-
If the filter is 2 days old and the dino oil is 2 days old you should be able to get away with just draining the oil and leaving the filter. I don's see how anything would be bothered. A quart/liter of essentially clean dino oil in another 5 quarts/liters of synthetic isn't going to hurt anything. All you'd be doing is creating your own natural/synthetic blend.
If the filter is 2 days old and the dino oil is old, change the oil and filter. You don't want old oil (in the new filter) contaminating the new synthetic.
If the filter is old and the dino oil is 2 days old, change the oil and filter. The old filter is potentially full of contaminates and you don't want them in the new synthetic. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Apologies if my posts have been a little unclear - I failed English at school
They're both 2 days old. The oil filter housing was removed when replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets. before I could speak to the bloke who did the work he'd filled it up with 10/40 part synthetic.
Thanks for the clear reply to my cryptic question. I'll be draining it off in my lunch break 2moro at work - made a bit of a mess on the driveway last time which my parents didn't really appreciate somehow _________________ 1980 924 Turbo RHD. 3" > 2.5" Stainless straight-through exhaust. |

I'd leave it as-is and switch to full synthetic at the next oil change. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

That's what I'll do then. No point in potentially wasting 2 filters and jugs of oil. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo RHD. 3" > 2.5" Stainless straight-through exhaust. |

Wait a minute, you couldn't have failed English, you are English. Now, I almost failed English, but I am an 'merican. So, what do you expect.
Anyway, I am with smoothie. The dino/syn blend will do you no harm for just one oil change. The reason for the mobil-1, is it resists coaking in the turbo better than dino, because it coaks at a higher temperature. But, you are not going to seriously coak your turbo bearings over just one oil change. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |
