What is it with 944's and smokey engines? Driving home from work yesterday and a black 944 turbo whips out of a slip road, going like stink, but the smoke was billowing out of the poor thing as bad as our 924 was when she had a snapped ring....

Couple of hours later and I'm driving back from my parents place when a white 944 comes screaming past all the other traffic, again plumes of smoke belching out... and again another driver ripping the arse out of his car when it was quite clearly very sick.

Is there some common fault on these motors or just co-incidence that i saw two equally ill cars on the same day?

Many of the cars do that when you have the throttle wide open. Mine would do it even when in perfect tune.... but with the cat removed.

Also my friends 1989 944S2 puts out a cloud but his is likey due to slightly worn piston rings. Only burns oil when reving high and working hard.

That is how you normally know that the person in front of you just went for it.... a puff of smoke (clean or not) coming from his tail pipes... and a tell tail rear end down.... if they have any power.

Also could be that they are running rich... remember even the newest 944s are now 13 years old!

Mine belches flames out the back. Does that count for "burning oil"?

Usually worn or poorly tuned engines burn fuel on acceleration and oil when you lift. Engine braking actually sucks the oil past the worn ring into the combustion chamber. Worn rings let fuel past under acceleration that dilute the oil making it thinner making your oil problem worse. I would suspect high mileage turbos or a rich air fuel ratio. Nothing smokes worse than a bad turbo. A good friend of mine had a twin turbo RX7 that could lay down a smoke screen. He popped them both with an aftermarket boost control.

It is also highly probable that they were running test pipes rather than using a catylitic convertor.
