Hey everyone, I'm new to the board and passively looking for a new project. The plan is a 5 cyl turbo swap, descent suspension, tires, and basic weight reduction. Looking to get into as light of a car as possible, while staying on a budget (i.e. no carbon fiber body parts in the near future).
Whats a good resource for vehicle weights? Specifically, early 924 vs. later 924 and 924S, as well as early 944.
What impact does the sunroof have on weight and center of gravity? How many non-sunroof cars were built? Do the later cars with the 5 lug setup offer any advantages other than availability of wheels?

I found a list of specs on a site a long time back, but no idea where it was... what i saved off give some basic info that might help -
924
1976 & 1977 weighed 2344lbs
1978 - 2380lbs
1979 & 1980 - 2486lbs
1981 & 1982 leaps to 2612
924 bhp varies in the list from 100 through to 125 depending on year and market.
924 turbo (aka 931) wieighed 2779 lbs for all years, with bhp varying from 150 thru to 177 depending on the market.
924S
1986 weighed 2618lbs
1987 2662lbs with 150bhp

What kind of weight could one reasonably acheive with basic weight reduction in an early car (76-80)?
When did Porsche start galvanizing these bad boys? Should I seriously consider this when making a purchase? Thanks again...

In terms of bare tub, the 79 is the lightest, and the 89 Turbo Tub is the strongest. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

Gosh, where are those numbers coming from?!
My data plate says 1500 kilos, or a bit over 3300 lbs. (don't know what the other number of 2700 kg is for)

I did a quick archives search, and some of the Board's racers are tipping the scales in the 2200, 2400, 2700 pound range. Surely stock weights are more than the 2900 range and they've jettisoned more than a couple hundred pounds to get down to racing trim.

Don't data plates usually show the max vehicle gross weight, not the empty weight? _________________ Chris

I'm going to defer to Smoothie's post since it came from his owners manual and is written in English. I don't have my owner's manual with me to attempt to translate.
I translated "gesamtgewicht" (1500 kg) as "total weight". I don't know what "Zuggewicht" means (2700 kg). "Zug" translates to "coarse" and "gewicht" relates to "weigh or weighing or weight" (so would it be gross weight?), but I don't think that a payload of 1200kg (2645 lbs) is realistic. Also, I don't know what the German abbreviaton "zul" before each of the words means.

"zul" is short for zulässig, or permissible.
zulässig Gesamtgewicht is "permissible total weight".
zulässig Zuggewicht is "permissible tractive weight", or the permissible total weight of the car plus a trailer. The Euro 931 is capable of towing a 2600 lb. trailer with brakes or an 1100 lb. trailer without brakes. So, the total weight of a fully-loaded car, plus a maximum-sized trailer would be 2700 kg, or almost 6000 lbs. _________________ Jon Furst |
