I recently picked up a 931. it had a serious problem - someone had welded the head of the engine... ( WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!! )
anyway, I have found a good replacement engine just blocks from my place. this was really nice...
after looking around and taking inventory, I find that nothing was labled when the previous owner took out the engine.
any special tools, things to watch out for.
thanks for the help & I will be doing a blog of my progress, and will post updates when I start in a couple of weeks

the 931 has an interference engine, so every couple of years you should do the timing belt and the tensioner pully,
as per the welding of the head, how and where did they weld it, any pictures?
also what year is it _________________ 3 928s, |

Check out CMXXXI's posts. He has a photo gallery with lots of pics that should help you at least figure out some of the plumbing. Or send me an email if there are any views you need, I've got a bunch but I'm on dial-up at home so they're slow for me to send over the 'net.
Good luck, you're going to need it!

Welcome aboard!
Could be your diamond in the rough. Sorta hard to give guidance on such a broad subject as "how to put it back together", if you know what I mean. Your best first investment should be a Haynes repair manual if you don't already have one. Legitimate factory manuals if you can find and fit them into your budget.
Your basic set of metric open-end, box-end and socket wrenches are all that's called for, plus a decent set of hex bits (like an allen wrench that is built into a standard socket). Screwdrivers, pliers and normal things found in an automotive tool box. Torque wrench for sure, and you'll probably eventually need a multimeter. CIS test set is a bonus, and may be necessary if once you get it running you find yourself with fuel system problems.
Pulling the head with the engine in the vehicle will entail a level of effort close to, if not equal to pulling the engine itself (entails turbocharger removal), so you may wish to consider that approach. With the motor out of the car, a lot of other things will be considerably easier to accomplish.
Let us know your specific problems as you get to them and I suspect between us all, we should be able to work you through most anything. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

gotta correct you here, removing the engine does NOT require that you pull the turbo first, the turbo will come out with the engine, and oil cooler attached _________________ 3 928s, |

Wait a minute, there can't be two 931s in Springfield. What are the odds? _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

Well, the title lists it as being a 1980 coupe.... the vin rings it up as a 931..
I will have pics of the abused head...and the welding was done one the pistion side.
the previous owner was kind enought to include the books... just not the service manuals.....
not really sure what a CIS is, was planning on the torque wrench
I'm up for the tech session... only thing is I don't want to push my car anywhere
I will also be replacing the carpet, this one just started to grow some mold....

CIS = Constant Injection system, it is the type of fuel injection, it really is a manual fuel injection system, like a very advanced carb, it is very reliable once tuned properly _________________ 3 928s, |

Whoops, you mis-read that, or maybe it was just ambiguous...pulling the engine doesn't entail pulling the turbo, but removing the head entails turbocharger removal (or at least loosening all the turbo bolts to the point that it is essentially removed). The point is, that the work involved in loosening the turbo to the point you can get the head off, just about justifies pulling the motor and then doing the work where you have room.
Sorry for the confusion. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Correction, with stamp's, there are 3 931s in Springfield....I've got 2
but the 2nd one is for parts, it's got body damage in the rear quarter so I'm just swapping the drivetrain into the '79. I got the whole car for $300 and it has 4wheel disks, so just for the brake conversion parts it was worth it. |
