I've been interested in composites for awhile, but spending several hundred dollars on materials to play and practice with is not an option. I was thinking about the process of laminating sheets of fiberglass bating and realized that the craft of PAPER MACHE is similar. only instead of fiberglass and resin you use paper and glue ( cheaper : flour and water and a little glue as a binder) should be some recipies on the net. and then moving up to using some cloth :cotton, nylon burlap or canvas ETC. and stronger glue,or cheap resin, and then on to the more expensive materials with more knowledge and confidence. I just thought I'd share my idea with you in case any of you were considering making fiberglass parts but were hesitant because of the cost of materiels. I think I will use my wife's pyrex baking dish (can see through it) and some pam spray cooking oil as a release agent, for my first paper machet project. I have all these and it will only cost about $.25 cents

interesting idea (the paper mache).
Wonder if you could use it for making molds for small one-of fiber parts.
There has to be a joke in there somewhere about lightweight paper mache bumpers and engine covers. |

there are other cheap materials you can use for making molds.if you have an original part your copying ,after preparing it so the mold material doesnt stick you can pour plaster of paris over it,work quickly it hardens in minutes. there is also gauze coated in plaster of paris that you dip in water and lay into place,(use to be used to make cast for broken bones. or you can use tubes of silicon and a caulking gun,but because it is flexable you will need to make a backing for it,so it will hold its general shape, the gauze works well for this.if you tell me what it is your looking to make I might be able to make some suggestions
oh 1 one more, bondo or body filler, its like tooth paste and will conform to any shape ,and doesnt stick to waxed or painted surfaces, but because it is pouris when hard epoxy and resin will syick to it,so it will have to be sealed, and waxed.
