I was looking around the vw sites for info on thier oil pumps .
Type 2 1968 - 1979
does the 924 pump look like this 1 1.6 L

http://www.bug-bits.freeserve.co.uk/ramva/fiche/t200700.gif

or this 1 1.6 -2.0 L or niether ?

If the vw oil pumps fit/work thier really cheap $20-$35 scroll for the $12 remote oil fiter mounts

Augidog the parts look similar but I'm not sure if the sizes are right for our pump.

WDB if what your saying about the pressure reliefs is true then I wonder what Applebits shop is actually doing when they rebuild pumps for him.

I suspect charging alot for labor to clean it and replace the $2 pressure relief valve and $2 spring ,and hunt down new $5 gaskets .

remember all the mechanicals on the 924 are vw/audi , I cant understand why the oil pumps that say vw are $20 and the ones that say porsche are $500 I wonder if there is a pet type CD for vw's

I did a little more reading on the vw lsd , I didnt get any details like dimentions ,but it was available as an option from 68-73 . if anyone is interested the codes for the trans that had the lsd option are , AE AD AL AP AQ AR AT AU BC BF BH BK DB DD .

AznDrgn,

All I know is it cost $125 to rebuild. It looks and feels like new. I am very satisfied.

Funny thing is I had one rebuilt because there are no new ones for sale any more. So don't throw away your old oil pumps. I bought the last oil pump it seems like a long time ago... But somehow it got misplaced- found it after I got this one rebuilt. I went with the rebuilt one- figure its just as good as new

I think they might be different because of the seal washer size compared to the original 924 faq #'s
I did go to a vw dealer awhile ago and the 924 faq #'s did not work
The first series of #'s are 924 faq

924faq 068 115 421 spring = VW 021-115-421B Spring, Relief Valve $1.90

924faq 056 115 411A piston = VW 021-115-411A Oil Pressure Relief Valve $2.95

924faq N 043 815 2 (sealing ring 20x24mm)= VW N 13829.3 Seal Washer, 22X29mm $1.60

augidog none of the part numbers you posted are even in the faq @ 924,org under lubrication . the few vw part numbers that are there are from those who have tracked down the vw equivalents . the vw beattle pressure relief valve and spring , might have a different part number and part because it had a different oil operating pressure , 1.8bar and .8 bar . I forget which type 1 and 11 had .8 or 1.8 . but A pump and housing from A vw OR audi is a direct swap for the 924 ,we just havent found out which one it is yet . and I'll bet you it cost less than $40 . when we find it .

the nubers you poster are not in the faq under lubrication .

wdb The numbers I got were from the 924 faq here

http://www.924.org/techsection/GarageFAQ.htm#oilpressure

I hope we find which one. It would be a nice savings and good maintenance procedure that I have not done yet.

it might help if we were both on the same page ,huh ? I was looking here .

http://www.924.org/parts/parts.htm

reading the faq you posted the oil pressure seems like its close between the 2 makes . I think the only way to be sure which one will or wont work ,would be for someone who has a oil pump in hand to buy a vw type 11 for $25 and make a close comparison . most parts stores will take back mechanical parts , however most will not take back electrical parts , you bought it its yours to keep .

sorry about the confusion .

WDB are you talking about the pump off a VW type 11 or the metering piston and spring? I can probably get the pump at work and compare it to the one I have off and see if it'll fit but I doubt I'll be able to get the spring and piston. If it's the pump your talking about lemme know the year and model and I'll look into it when I get back to work.

yes its the pump I'm talking about , the 924 valve and spring are relatively cheap . I dont know what year or model , my pump is still on the car and hard to see ,thats why augidog posted this picture and asked if the 924 looked similar http://www.bus-boys.com/oilsystem91wc.html and I posted these 2 and ask the same .
http://www.bug-bits.freeserve.co.uk/ramva/fiche/t200700.gif

http://www.bug-bits.freeserve.co.uk/ramva/fiche/t200710.gif .

thats why we dont already know , because its difficult, we have to check them all till we find the right one . I would think it is a 70's model but we cant be sure . how many vw models were there in the 70's . rabbit/golf , westfalia , vanagon , type 4 beatle ,thing ,carmen ghia , a station wagon kinda car , I forget the name 411,412, ?.type 3 . I think once we identify the 70's cars , its just a matter of comparing till we find it . if you bring up vw on the puter at work will it bring up a list of all vw ? start at the top ?

Hey! Happy New Year!
Maybe they just took the site down for maintenance... or some drunk tripped over the servers' power plug. You know how their office parties go over there.

maybe , I hope so .

I was reading up on the type 2 vw buses ,specifically the transmission's. according to a few of the articles , quote "Internally the transaxles are the same with some minor modifications changes in gear ratios, and ring and pinion sets. "

I'd be willing to bet ,these are the same gear sets as used in the 924 ( maybe the n/a's only . ) they say the 3.88 ring and pinions from the beatle will fit the buses , which happen to be the same size as the 924 , the input shafts (size 13/16 24 spline ) on the buses is same as my 79 924 .

I think swapping in a vw bus's gear sets could be a good thing . I would trade 30 miles an hour of the top speed for some serious acceleration from lower gears and/or r+p and a lsd .

anybody know where to get a 25 year old vw trans cheap .

So i've taken it apart and cleaned it thoroghly.I used a buffer wheel to polish the outside of the larger gear as it had some small burrs on it.I soaked the entire thing in varsol for a day to soften everything up then I plasti-blasted everything, then glass beaded the gears to clean them and to act as a stress reliever.Magnafluxed the gears,no cracks found.Re-assembled and presto spins freely with very little play.A question is why to pack the gears with vaseline?Won't this contaminate the oil once installed? I'm not going to final assemble until I hear from you guys.Thanks.
