Oh well, had to happen. Knew something was wrong when it sucked 4 litres of coolant the other day...
Incidentally, cam oiler tube had snapped off after number 3, might explain the mysterious 0.5 - 1 bar drop in oil pressure
Who's a good (cheap!) source for parts in the UK? Usually use Berlyn (excellent) but could do with a second source.
Cheers from the driving seat of the Volvo for now. _________________ 1982 931. 'Nuff said |

Cool, no material damage to head or block it seems. General clean-up/flush, check head for level and new gaskets should do it.

As an observation. If your turbo is sound, leave it where it is.
Once the exhaust was out of the way I had easy access to the 3rd turbo/manifold flange bolt with a deep offset closed wrench - 1/8th turn at a time but good enough The J pipe wasn't that big a deal but cost me a 1/2 - 3/8 adapter before they let go at the top! _________________ 1982 931. I have replace the turbo while engine in the car and I didnt find it that difficlut, I came at it from below, but I did remove the oil cooler lines and I was able to break it free with a wrench, once use I used a stubby ratchet and it came off easily _________________ 3 928s, |

Read in the Haynes that the 12 point head bolts don't need re-torquing after 1000 miles. Is this correct? And should I replace the head bolts with new? Also, should the final 180 deg. be applied in one go or incrementally?

there may be some useful info here
http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/aug2003/techtotech.cfm
Use an accurate torque wrench to tighten standard type head bolts in 3 to 5 incremental steps following the recommended sequence and torque specs for the application. Tightening the bolts down gradually creates an even clamping force on the gasket and reduces head distortion |

If you can get past the cost, the best thing you can do regarding head bolts is to install Raceware studs. No more retorquing!

Thanks for the links Guys. What I really wanted to know is whether the 12 point "stretch" bolts can be reused or if they should be replaced when changing the head gasket - I'm guessing replacement...

No they generally can be reused
as the torque is not that high
that the bolts will be limited
unless you do it a bunch
of times and it fails on you
again... _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na
