was looking for cubic inches for my 944 and was wondering since I found a semi complete 3.0 at the yard today in a totalled 944 near where I got my 2l shortblock.
appears to have damaged some ancilliaries but the rest is still cocooned in the wreckage.
any thoughts welcome.

the 3.0L was a 16v unit only IIRC, and according to www.powerhaus.com a 3.0L 16valve head can be mated to 2.5l 944 block, so I see no reason that a 2.5l 8 valve head couldn't be mated, but it would require some machining to the water and oil ports where the head and block meet _________________ 3 928s, |

You'd be best off using the 16V head, it's a much better head than the 8V. |

The 2.5 l head will restrict the 3 l motor to 2.5 l performance pretty much, will it not... hence theres no point doing it |

it will lower performance abit but not down to the 2.5L performance _________________ 3 928s, |

Um....wouldn't that just be exactly the same as boring and stroking a 2.5 engine....it would definitely up performance. |

I don't think it will fit period, because the bore on the 3L is much larger than that of the 2.5L _________________ 90 944 S2

hi guys,
the bore on the 3.0 is not the real problem, it's the cylinder spacing. On the 3.0 and 2.7 motors, they had to essentially spread the 4 individual cylinders out a tiny bit to make the bore the size they wanted and still have enough room inbetween each piston for reliability. I do like the idea of a 3 liter 8v, though--more reliable(the dohc heads had issues with the intermediate chain and have a lot more moving parts) and quite the sleeper. The only problem is you would need to use an s2 short block with a 1989 944 head, kinda rare. You would also need to use the 89 pistons, because they have the same bore as the s2, but have the valve cutouts for the 8v head. Put this combo together and you should be looking at about a 25% increase in power, and a healthy leap in torque thanks to the longer stroke. And from the outside it will look like a normal 944. ...ahh.... if only I worked at Parts Heaven |
