Well, I located the gas tank I inquired about below. It is coming out of a 5 speed car. Since the transmission will be out of the other car, I've been thinking. Aside from the transmission, what else do I have to change to transfer the 5 speed to my 4 speed, 1978 car?

To convert from a 4 speed to 5 speed you will need (in addition to the transaxle): the torque tube, shift linkage, and torsion bar housing. You only need the torsion bar housing if your car does not have the proper one with the arms to mount the transaxle.

The 5 speed is from a standard '81 924. No turbo.

Then, as I recall, it's a straight swap. No torque tube necessary. The spline should be the same, though as noted it can get a little tight around the gas tank. I guess the only other thing that's not often noted is the shift rod - I think it's longer for the 5-speed. Or shorter... I certainly had a problem with going from a 4speed to the 931/944 5-speed (which also required a torque tube and the right clutch, but that's another story - the shaft is larger). Naturally you'll want the better shifter and shift knob.

You won't need to mess with the rear suspension except that you'd be advised to drop it as a unit to ease installation. No torsion bar carrier swap required.

Skip's comments would be correct for his '79. However, the layout of your car is different.

Oops, thanks Vaughan. When I wrote that, the Audi based 5 speed completely slipped my mind.

You will need the shift bar only and it should fit without any problem. I did it and used the 5 speed shifter bar. Need a torque tube I have two.
