931 Fuel Pump Relay

If the fuel pump was drawing too many amps, would that cause the fuel pump relay to burn out fequently? Also would it cause the fuel pump fuse to get burn marks on the tips of the fuse ends. There is a 20amp fuse in the fuel pump fuse slot (and I dont know the correct size) & the pump is only supposed to draw around 8.5 amps. I am thinking a faulty fuel pump drawing too many amps may be causing my problems (9 months in the works)....Chris
