I take it all back! The 87 924S didn't die afterall. It was a feendishly clever
electrical failure made to look like a belt failure. I guess I'm becoming a 924
crazed paranoid lunatic. Oh well. Happy motoring, Dwak PS The mechanic
even fixed the fault for free.

As a fellow 87 924S owner, I'm breathing a sigh of relief along with you. I have to tell you that your "nightmare scenario" belt-snapping, valve crunching, post made me a bit paranoid too!

As a matter of interest, what exactly was the electrical problem?
