|
|
I have a 1981 931 with a 1980 931 drivetrain which means it has the G31 transmission. I'm not sure if my car has a limited slip differential but I'm guessing probably not.
The transmission will need some attention at some point in the near future. It's tough to find first gear and grinds going into second if shifted quickly. I knew this when I bought the car...and so now I'm prioritizing which projects to conquer first.
I've read many of the G31 rebuild threads on the board and the concerns with the availability of certain parts.
I've done some searches and found some websites that claim to have rebuilt (or just used?) transmissions. I haven't called them yet because I'm not quite ready to buy but was curious to get opinions from this group. Having someone rebuild my transmission is an option but seems like there would be a ton of parts/labor involved. I'm guessing that these prices are too good to be true?
Here are the websites.
DC automotive. I've actually purchased used parts from them in the past and the parts were as described.

I’ve found that California motorsports offers a rebuild service for the G31
https://californiamotorsports.net/products/cms-porsche-924-transmission-rebuild
“We are familiar with and can service the 924 5 speed (including Turbo) "snail shell" transaxle. Some parts however are no longer available.
$1095 labor plus parts.” _________________ 1981 Porsche 931 w/S1 engine & g31 transmission. Water-cooled intercooler |

I bought parts from CMS that you linked to above, via ideola when he was up and running with his store. Im not sure they still have all syncros and rings. i changed ring on 1st and synchros on 1-2-3. They werent bad but it was fun to change and the trans leaked so it was nice to seal it up. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Good to know. Unless I can find someone local ...I think I'll be shipping the transmission for a rebuild...hopefully this winter. _________________ 1981 Porsche 931 w/S1 engine & g31 transmission. Water-cooled intercooler |

Nearly four years later
I picked up another G31 transaxle from a fellow board member last fall.
I'm going to have it rebuilt and swap it out for the ailing G31 in my car.
I sent it off to Kevin at Catellus Engineering in MA last week. Stay tuned for updates...will be interesting to find out what it needs.

Not sure, they didn't show up in my searches. Here's a like to their transaxle service page, might be something just not listed.
