C'mon, I'm thinking it went like this:
"Hans did you ask engineering for a molded hose to make the bend from the fuel tank to the pump?"
"Nine."
"Guess we will just use this filter that has 90 degrees between the inlet and outlet"

Okay, I just called a Porsche dealer, he said it is listed as a fuel filter. It is part number 477 209 233. It goes for $30.50. Since it is a "fuel filter" I will most likely buy a cheaper $4.99 one at auto zone _________________ =====>Alex<=====

16 years later and I am in the same predicament. I have a 78 and I think I should replace this filter. When I shake it, tiny little black bits come out. Assuming that's not good... If they come out when I shake, they would come out with the flow of the gasoline too right?
What did everyone here end up replacing it with?
I do see the part is still being sold in Germany for the Opel Cadet, but no one is shipping it here to the States. Did find one in Norway, but will be $100 with shipping! _________________ 78 924, 87 944S, 89 944 Turbo, 08 Cayenne |

I tried to get one for my Martini which had been stored for years, a few years ago, gave up as NLA. Just kept taking it off and blasting it with an air gun periodically, kept collecting rubbish from the tank which got less over time. It's designed to keep rubbish from killing the fuel pump, _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic

I cut a broken one of these open off of a '77 and it had no filter material in it. From what I read in past articles, posts, etc. is that this was used to give some fuel volume to the fuel pump from the tank so the fuel pump wouldn't be starved if there were bubbles, etc. When the pump gets "starved" it gets noisy hence the "silencer" name.
No idea it that is true but it makes sense. _________________ 1977 924 N/A Martini Edition |

Interesting. It's referred to as a "fuel filter" in PET, but that 90 degree angle does make it seem like it would be for flow or something. I'll just clean out the one I have and try to get some of the ones that are still available in Europe _________________ 78 924, 87 944S, 89 944 Turbo, 08 Cayenne |

If you get a replacement, please cut open the old one and post some pictures. _________________ 1977 924 N/A Martini Edition |
