Yeah...I have seen this conversion on a street car application...but I wanted to do it a bit differently.

Wow britain you waste no time! I talked to you for a bit about this when I drove up to your house for the 5-lug and 5 speed. That couldn't have been more than a year ago and you've already finished it! Might have to pirate this for an LS swap build I got going. _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (not started)

This car is dizzyingly cool (made up word I think)...in other words it makes me dizzy with how cool it is
I love all the thought that went and is going into this! _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

So...wanted to give a bit of a mid-season update with some items on the car.
I bought a pair of fiberglass doors at the beginning of last year and they have been sitting in the attic gathering dust ever since....you know, few "other" projects to get done on the car. I believe they are from GT-Racing and they were pretty rough. The inner structure was useless, there were zero door hinge provisions, and it had a rough opening all along the window frame.
We first cut out the inner panels (wouldn't clear the cage anyway) and used carbon fiber to enclose the entire window track area and deleted the door handle pockets. I then cut out a set of stock door hinges from a donor pair doors, fabricated an aluminum mounting base, and used panel bond to secure everything in place. I also took a pair of stock striker assemblies, cut off the door lock mechanism and trimmed off everything that wasn't needed. For the door latching mechanism, we machined a few mounting bungs, panel bonded it to the fiberglass, and made a rod to be able to operate the door from both inside and outside of the car.
In the end, the entire assembly weighed just under 11lbs each. The gutted stock sheetmetal doors that we had on the car were 28lbs each...so in the end we removed 34lbs off the car. The only catch is that you can no longer use the door frames to assist in getting in and out of the car...you break it, you buy it!

0.5mm...that is all it takes. Had some engine overheating issues at the last race, we had to take off the head and have it resurfaced. "While we were there" we decided to do a little fiddling. Replaced the exhaust values with a new set and went 0.5mm oversized on the intake valves. While that doesn't sound like much, combined with and optimized angle cut on the valve seats, a 1mm step-down on the stem of the valve, and a little porting on the port...we saw about 10% more engine power. We also cut off a cylinder on a junk head and did a little optimization/experimentation on the flow bench.

Made a new front splitter that is actually two halves this time to make it a bit easier to repair in the future. This set-up also utilized a revised front tunnel design that is much larger...which caused so many other things to change to make it fit. Had to redo all of the splitter mounts, move the oil cooler up 1/2" which now interfered with the intake piping so had to chop that off the intercooler and reweld it back up to get everything to line back up. Bonus is that the new splitter is only 11lbs which is 30% lighter than the old one which had been repaired several times.

Ok...now to the bad news.
Well...Shit Happens.
For those who are not aware, the UBoot Porsche 931 met its demise this past weekend at the Lucky Dog Racing League event at Pacific Raceway.
It was a great weekend with lots of promise. We had spent a significant amount of time repairing damage from the previous race and doing some upgrades while we were there. Little engine work, some weight savings, and a couple of new aero bits had the car performing better than ever, setting personal bests at Pacific and working very well.
Testing went off without a hitch with all drivers getting comfortable in the car. In qualifying we had an alternator reading lower than expect voltage and decided to change it before the race and therefore was unable to set a competitive time. The race started and it turned into a two car battle with the Mystic Racing Mustang...they had the obvious power advantage but we were reeling them in thru the corners.
Unfortunately this is where the story ends. About 15mins into the race we were passing a slower car and got tagged in the drivers rear which "pit maneuvered" us into a spin and off the track at ~80mph. The driver came to a sudden stop, experiencing a ~6.0g impact as the car hit the berm on the left side of the track. Fortunately, with the combination of required drivers equipment and extra cage structure in the footwell, the driver was able to "hobble" away with a few dislocated bones in his foot and a sore back.
We can argue back and forth on who cause the collision or where someone should or should not have been...but in the end it doesn't really matter. The car is totaled and the driver is totally okay...which is most important. This is not the end of the story for the Audi 5cly powered Porsche 924...we will be back stronger and faster than ever...although it might take a little bit of time. Thanks to everyone who has reached out regarding the incident and the car...we really appreciate it.

+1
Sorry this happened so soon after these latest mods what a major bummer. Your cage worked wonderfully especially when seeing that floor folding like it did and you need to be applauded for that part of the build too. _________________ 1980 931 since 1989
