Hey folks, looking forward to being a part of this forum

Picked up a 1977 924 about 2 weeks ago and after rebuilding one of the rear drums I’m happy to say it runs and drives nicely, I’m super excited to own this project and get it in 100% working order (I’ll settle for 80% but I figure I’d aim high )

https://imgur.com/gallery/AH9tsWe

So a couple of questions I thought I’d ask since you all would certainly have the knowledge and experience with these cars:

1. I’ve been using Rockauto for most of the drum parts but their selection for some other parts are lacking, are there any other websites that you all use for parts pretty often?

2. The none of driver side running lights work on this car currently. One of the previous owners (of which there were 3) did a bit of a hack job on the wiring, a friend and I fixed some to get the driver headlight to work but are there any areas which you all might be aware that effect ALL of those running lights? I realize it might be a ground issue I’m just looking for advice on where that connection is and other possible problem spots on this car.

3. The metal bracket for the passenger side mirror has a split in it where the mirrors set screw is supposed to go so the mirror doesn’t attach correctly, is anyone familiar with any replacements or solutions for this?

Sorry if these are all questions I could have answered with more research I just figured I’d ask those who know some tried and true solutions etc.
Thanks for your time

Welcome, Parts places are: Pelican Parts, Paragon Porsche. I have gotten some used parts from Retro Automotive in Vermont,HH area. Auto Atlanta has in the past been a very unreliable source, don't know about now. Also a place near DC called DC automotive(I think) has used parts. For factory stuff I go to Sunset Porsche in Portland OR for best prices.

Running lights is almost always the ground, but the wiring is over 40 years old, so check it all. Mirrors are hard to come by, see if you can glue it back together. Check the for sale section of the board, members are quite helpful.

Awesome, thank you for the help, I planned on checking the ground but I don’t really have the ability to run all new wiring for the whole car right now. I’m just trying to get it licensed and street legal before I try to start on any major restoration work.

You might try AutohausAZ as well. Prices are usually a bit better than Pelican and I've had good experiences with them in times past.

Good to know, thanks

Another question/issue that’s recently developed since I’ve made this post is that the ceramic resistor going to the coolant fans shattered and is unusable. I’ve been searching through the forum and most of what I’ve found usually relates to getting newer fans entirely, the resistor in question is like $50 USD on pelican and at that point an aftermarket fan would bring more benefit. Could I just run the current factory fan without the resistor? I assume the motor would burn up from the current but if I’m getting a newer set of fans (custom, aftermarket, etc.) then getting it to run temporarily while that arrives is agreeable to me.

Anyone know of a fan assembly that’s easy to get and practically bolt in? Some small modifications are okay but I’d like to avoid anything too involved.

You can run the fan without the resistor no problem.
The resistor is just for low speed operation when the ignition is off.

Do the rear hatches between most of the years swap? Found a 87 944 in my area that is scrapped out from a v8 swap that was abandoned halfway, was thinking about grabbing it and swapping on the rear hatch since it has a spoiler/whale tale/fin whatever you call it but I want to make sure it swaps - it’s an 87 hatch from a 944 getting swapped onto a 77 924

Second that all the hatches swap to my knowledge. One cannot install a spoiler onto a spoilerless hatch though, so be aware of that moving forward.

Would recommend cleaning all of the grounds in the car. There are heaps above the fuse box; look for a couple circular crowns mounted facing downward. Some in the back near the spare tire and such as well that could need a cleaning. It's tedious work, but worth it.

Rockauto, Paragon, AutohausAZ, Pelican, and a handful of others have parts, but they're getting a bit thin lately. If it doesn't look like it matches or you have any doubts; call the provider to be sure.
