So given that my car is a 1982 931 with the five-lug mesh 15" wheels...what size tires am I supposed to have? I need to get new ones, and what I have now are 195/60R15. Mysteriously, Tire Rack does not show that as one of the stock sizes for this vehicle. For the 15" wheels, they show either 185/70, 195/65 or 215/60. _________________ -----------------------------------------

Thanks for that. I always forget about that section of the site, lol.
Of course, it's still confusing...apparently my tires are not a stock size at all. Probably because some of the stock sizes are not so easy to find anymore? I'm not sure I really want a taller sidewall than I currently have. I guess I can stick with 195/60 or go to something like 205/55? I guess I'll see what's available. _________________ -----------------------------------------

The stock size is 185/70 and I recently change brand new ones from Omni Tyres - Radar at c.$70 per piece. It’s the cheapest compared to Pirelli or Vredestein. |

Stock size isn't that important. Chose a good tyre and something that fits the wheel, the esthetics and performance that you want. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

I ended up going with Sumitomo HTRs in 195/60, same size that was on the car when I got it. It looks good to me, fits the wheel and seems fine. It's not rated to 200mph but oh well. _________________ -----------------------------------------

I feel like the Sumi HTR+s are what I have on my Turbo now - like them quite a lot. Very good grip in the wet, and substantially better ride and steering effort level than others I've had on previously.
If you get too high-performance of a tire on our cars, with too stiff of a sidewall, thanks to our manual steering racks I've found the steering effort gets really unpleasant at speed, not to mention the ride quality goes to shit.
Of course, being in the Detroit area, ride is always a challenge!! LOL
Edit, just checked - think the HTRs were the last set, looks like I'm back on BFGs now... well, still I do remember them being quite good. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I've liked them so far. I haven't had many miles on them yet, and right now the car is getting worked on for other reasons, but so far I'm pleased with them. Good point about the super high performance tires, I never really thought about that. _________________ -----------------------------------------

The current set of tyres under my 931 is just over 5 years old. While on a spirited drive the other day the tyres locked up a couple of times, so I think they have aged out and have started to loose their grip.
I see a lot of love for the Sumitomo HTR here and I know these are also loved by the 968 folks. However, I can't source them here in the Netherlands.
I currently run 205's but for my next set I want to drop back down to 195/65R15.
Can you guys please share what you have on your car and how they hold up to spirited driving. My main criteria is grip in dry and wet weather. I do not drive in the winter. Tread wear is a non issue as my tyres will run out of time long before they run out fo tread.
The current options I see is:
- Dunlop Sport Bluresponse
- Dunlop SP Sport Fastresponse (traction in the wet doesn't seem great)
- Continental PremiumContact 6
- Pirelli Cinturato P1 Verde
If I am feeling spendy I could opt for the Pirelli P7's with N3 rating, but this will set me back at least €1200. |

Mostly exclusive. Theres a compromise to be had depending on your choice of driving.
For my turbo I run Uniroyal Rainsports for general road for wet and winter use. I use R888's or similar for dry and summer grip on road and racing. Lucky to have spare sets of wheels, but this is the only way to cover my wet v dry expectations.
For my company car I have run various flavours of modern Michelin, Pirelli, Continental, Bridgestone. I got to be honest, the premium brands are near impossible to tell apart on BMW, Audi or VW cars I have had in recent years.
Did have some Dunlops on my wife's Leaf from new. Now just switched to Goodyear eco version. They stick well....
Don't believe there are too many 'bad' tyres out there as long as you avoid the cheap ditch finders......and they are kind of obvious which they are.
For the CGT race car shell, I have just bought a bunch of Fuchs with old Continental Sport Contact tyres. I'll run them on the car until I switch out to R888's or similar when its track ready. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

For my 951S I bought a set of Continental ContiSportContact. These were rather expensive for the road tires, but seems that old "supercar" tire sizes got expensive. These are 245/45/16 rear and 225/50/16 front. I can strongly recommend these for regular use. Never driven the car on track though. _________________ ---

Mine seems to be extremely easy on tires and gets a LOT of traction for not being on very big or great tires.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Thanks guys!
I like to do roadtrips, so the R888's is not a smart option for me as I never know if I will be driving through a downpour. Side note; I totaled my GT3 in a download due to aquaplaning last year, so wet grip is almost as important to me as dry grip.
@Kondzi, I am still looking for a set of 16" teledials. This will solve my tyre issue as I can then go the Dunlop SP sports or Bridgestone Potenza's both excellent tyres for my requirements.
I think the best choice for me looks like the Dunlop Sport BluResponse. |
