...and I wasn't even driving!

Just finished a hellishly hot race weekend at Gingerman - SCCA Festival of Speed. My wife and codriver (and team chef) was doing the duties, wheeling the #77 ITB 924 (NA) on track. This was her first time ever running this track, and her first race since mid-season last year when we again blew the head gasket - before I realized the block was no longer straight and pistons were shot, necessitating a full rebuild.

Unusual schedule; rather than starting Sat morning, we started mid-afternoon Saturday with two brief 15-min sessions to practice then qualify. This was nice, we were able to spend only one night camping in the heat.

We were also group 1, which was awesome as we were able to finish up and leave early Sunday, home by dinnertime.

How'd the races go? Feckin' hot! THREE races Sunday, starting at 8:30 with the first 1/2-hr race. That wasn't too bad, it was only 80F, but then a post-lunch race at noon for 15min qualifier, and another 30-min race at 2PM. By 2PM, the driver coolshirt pump had packed it in (though the fresh air fan was still blowing, thankfully), and the temp was 88. But our driver toughed it out and got all her laps in, going her fastest yet, completing her goal of dropping 2s per session.

She still has a bit of a way to go in pace, but is on the right track and regaining confidence in a car that's been temperamental the last few years. Now she's ready to push and push again, start to develop speed and competitive pace.

As she was running unopposed in ITB this weekend, and completed all her laps, she did also win all of her races. Not only that, she actually beat the one other IT car (an ITS BMW 3-series) Sunday morning when he ran into early issues with his coolshirt!

Next up for her will be Mid-O first weekend in Sept, assuming Ohio doesn't close completely by then!

Next weekend for me, in the prototype, is this coming weekend at Waterford Hills, testing and tuning my car Friday then running out the race weekend. Then Grattan Raceway on the west side of Michigan August 22-23rd.

Neglected to add the temps; in the worst of the heat, the coolant was running about 195 (190 in the other shorter/cooler sessions) as measured in the tube from the t-stat to the radiator, and oil was 250F - not cooked, but time to flush it out!

Ditto for me at Summit Point this past weekend. Qualifying on Sat morning and 88 degrees. I was 3rd out of 8 IT-Bs (10th overall) and ran the race that afternoon at 95 degrees. 15 laps was tough but I finished 2nd in class Sunday, I again qualified 3rd of 8 B cars and ran a 20 lap race in 95 degree heat. But I had hooked up my Cool Suit and fared better heat wise. Again finished 2nd to a Mazda Protege that has a great engine. We run with IT-S and 7 of them were ahead of us at the end of the race.
I'm kind of taking it easy today since all the prep, racing and unpacking has worn me out. Maybe we will run next month at New Jersey if travel restrictions are lifted. Who knows right now.
