Hopefully somebody has an idea

These pieces were dug out of the oil pick up opening screen from a turbo motor circa '82. Its one of my spare engines of unknown origin but was hoping to use for a temporary swap

So far I haven't thought of anything they might be. Any ideas??? Size wise is pretty small considering opening of pick up is roughly 17mm (Guessing since I am at my computer)

Some of the pieces including a thin metal ring

Assembly of some in probably too tight a radius. Plastic or similar

Metal piece - bronze maybe

So you may be on to something there. At first I was thinking it was too big but it explains the other piece. That piece could be from a valve guide

The head was rebuilt by somebody before I owned the car.

Thanks! I am going to dig deeper and compare

Cool, thanks!

This engine came out of a badly crashed '82 that still had fresh moly on a new Cam (might actually be a Piper by looks but I will see if I can reverse eng specs). I seriously think it was crashed on a test run

There was a lot of 'interesting' stuff going on with it. Like a 2660 compressor in a 2664 housing and they dropped something down there to beat it up for good measure. One head bolt seemed loose and they tried to port the head a bit. I've ported my fair share of heads in my life so this hurt a bit to see. They didn't do too much but because of all this I am checking everything!

The short block seems untouched stock however so I am happy at least in this department. Just this stuff I found in the oil pick up. It was doing its job

Thanks again guys

I had similar pieces in my oil once I started to drive my 924 more and do some auto-x my 924. My car sat for a long time before I got it. Doesn't smoke on start up and doesn't burn much oil. I believe the engine is the original to the car. I think I remember reading other posts about other people finding these pieces in their oil as well. Mine looked like valve stem seals. Have driven the car for the past 9 yrs and havent had an issue yet. And have completed a lot more track days in the last 4-5 yrs.

Yeah, I was wondering about valve stem seals; it's not hard to have original ones break when pulling them out...

The best thing for me then, is to acquaint myself again with an original valve stem seal. My memory of them is next to non-existent. Just need to dig an old head off the shelf.

Thanks again everyone

Definitely a valve stem seal...was my first thought before reading thru the thread when you mentioned the thin metal ring...maybe the spring retainer of the stem seal:

Was this the motor that dropped a valve? Would explain the seal and the valve guide piece.

Are those other pieces metal or plastic?

Yes this is that motor. Most of the pieces are plastic except for that brass/bronze appearing piece which mildly magnetic.

I have only been visualizing a replacement seal. I can't seem to remember how a stock seal looked like? Otherwise these parts are foreign to me

This valve stem / seal theory from everyone seems like the 100% reasonable guess

I'll see if I can get better pics

I had number 4 exhaust valve seal in my oil pickup, or at least the top part of it. It could be seen since the exhaust port was a bit moist and burned oil on the walls. But it ran fine and didn't consume much oil during the year or so it ran with it broken.

Those pieces look identical. I took the pick up off to back flush. Couldn't find a screen to catch the debris right away so I put that project aside.

You guys are allaying my fears for sure

The head is off too. I am breaking it down to check everything out. So this way I'll know for sure if there are seals there. Everything else points to a recent head rebuild by the PO but I am checking everything they did. I am assuming I will find new seals

Not even sure yet if this will be the head I use just yet. Just need to pull valves/springs and it will be bare

Much more spare time this week. Been jumping from this engine, to 82 931, to 81 931 to keep me busy. Then the cycle repeats

I found some original valve seals and it looks very much like the pieces.

Then I started checking out this "rebuilt" head to see if I could use it temporarily. The more I dig the less I want to use it, even for a summer

It had one valve stem seal "doing its own thing". The rebuilder actually tried, no not tried, actually crimped the bottom of an oversized seal. It fell off when I was removing the seals.

They also had one eccentric guide since they had it valve stem slim all the way down to the head.
